How do you work this thing?

I registered, logged in, and ended up on a Help Island. I walked around and ended up with a bunch of other lost people wondering how to move.

Is there a directory of places we can visit?

hit search, tab over to places, and throw in a key word, then teleport where you want to go.

Many questions about Second Life can be answered by doing a search on Google or other search engine.

There is a Help option on the Second Life menu. It has links that will take you to Second Life help sites.

There are buttons on the bottom of the screen - you can find out what they do by clicking on them.

The Search button at the bottom is one to try. Clicking on that will produce a dialog box with a number of tabs. One of those tabs is labeled Showcase. Clicking on that tab will produce a list of places to visit. One of the tabs is called Places. Clicking on that will let you search for places.

You might want to join a group for new users. New Citizen, Inc., nicknamed NCI, is a good one.

The Snapzilla site, a place for sharing Second Life images, is a good way to find places, just find pictures of places that look interesting, and click on the teleport link, if there is one.

Fly around the help island until you see the big green beacon. Touch the sign under that and you'll receive a LM (landmark) to get to off to the rest of SL. From there, like Atom says, Search will be your best friend - look for the blue button on the bottom of the screen..

Once you leave help island you can't go back, though. There's a public version of it but the one you're at now is lot more sane..
