Is anyone experiencing trouble with the IM to e-mail service? Every time I try to reply to a message, I get a mailer-daemon response saying that the messages could not be delievered.

Is the message particularly old? (The one you're replying to)

Nope, I'm trying to reply to messages that came in 30 seconds ago.

I can send to other people fine, so the problem isn't on my end.

you can't reply from your email inbox. it's incoming only.

I know that's not true, because prior to tonight, I've carried on entire conversations through my e-mail service to someone in SL.

Is it broken AGAIN? They've been having lots of trouble with IM-to-Email lately.

23rdDjin, just so you know, it was never incoming-only. IM-to-Email and Email-reply-to-IM have been in place since 2004. If it never worked for you, I can think of five possible reasons:

1. Maybe you just never tried it.

-OR-

2. There's something wrong with your settings, either in SL or in your E-mail account.

-OR-

3. If you're using Hotmail, it won't work. There's an article in the Knowledge Base about why, if you're curious to read it.

-OR-

4. You waited too long to reply. There is a time limit. I think it's about an hour or so, but don't quote me on that.

-OR-

5. You tried it during a time when it was broken.

Things go wrong all the time, of course, but it is SUPPOSED to work both ways.

Much longer, in my own experience. I've replied to a message a few days after I received it. I thought it was somewhere around a month before they didn't work, but I've never tested it at all, so don't quote me either =P

Sadly, the old blog entries aren't searchable with the new blog software..

I know LL blogged about this a while ago. IIRC, the timeout for replying to an offline IM via email was something like 5 days.

I remember reading something about 5 days as well. It was in the context of a change they were making to the im/email system, where session info was being stored in the email address or some such thing.

Update: It looks like the message bounces back like that if the person you're talking to has signed off. Messages sent from e-mail don't get saved or pushed to their e-mail
