I'm sorry to say that I'm EXTREMELY unhappy with the performance of SL 1.3 on my Dual 2GHz G5. Comparing back and forth side-by-side with a 2.56Ghz Pentium 4 machine, the PC runs circles around the Mac. I can get up to 30 frames per second in a lot of areas on the PC, so everything seems very smooth. On the Mac, I'm lucky if I can ever reach 10. And it freezes for a second or two often while I'm playing which gets very annoying. Let me tell you that flying/riding vehicles is almost impossible on the Mac.
Yes, all the settings were adjusted to be the same; yes, I wasn't running anything else. My PC has an ATI Radeon 8500 or something like that, so it's not as good as the G5's 9600 Pro. However, the PC card is a 128MB card, whereas the card in my Mac is a 64MB card. I know that may make a little difference, but this much difference is outrageous.
It's gotten to the point where I may not even use SL except on the PC at this point. Which upsets me greatly, because the PC is my brother's and I generally am loath to use it.
Please tell me you are working on this problem!?!?!
Jared
P. S. Other non-multiplayer games on the G5 that I've played are really fast. So there's no reason why SL has to be so slow from a Mac hardware standpoint....

SL is not optimized for the Altivec instructions.
SL is multithreaded, but the threads aren't balanced.
The download page says "Mac OS X Beta".
If you are crashing, please use the crash reporter. If you are not, please contact LL and ask them their recommended suggestions. Offer to send them your debug logs, they are in the App Support folder for SL.
My main desktop is a PC, but I purchased a Powerbook in April and was ecstatic that I could finally start playing SL on it in November. Sure, it's not the best thing since sliced bread, or the PC client, but the PC client has been in development for 2+ years now, the Mac client has not.

Yeah! Crashes aren't bugs... they're FEATURES!
*ducks*
I've heard from other people on G5's that it actually runs SLOWER than on my Powerbook G4 15 1GHZ. Don't really know what that would be, but it's what I've heard, your mileage may vary.
Have you tried messing with the video settings? It's very VERY important not to have AGP acceleration on, as it causes the client to crash REALLY HARD and take down your whole Mac (ATI bug). Also try turning down your draw distance. I run around at 64 because things move a lot faster. If I need a long distance look I'll kick it up to 96 or 128. Anything above that and the world stutters too much.

From: someone Originally posted by Taun Patel Have you tried messing with the video settings? Yes, if I turn *everything* off and use a low draw distance setting, then it's kind of usable. But that's not the point. I don't have to do all that in the PC client. I mean, my G5 is no faster than SL on my iMac. I can understand my iMac 800Mhz with a crappy video card running slow. But the G5 is hardly any faster. So, uh, I guess LL really needs to get their Mac optimizations going! (BTW, I have been sending them crash logs. I think as you said, it's been OK since I turned off AGP acceleration.) Regards, Jared
