Hi All, I am running the latest SL viewer, latest version of Quicktime and Vista (x64) Ultimate. I have all the correct streaming settings ticked within SL. I have media enabled on my island and others have confirmed that they can see it - but I can't! I've uninstalled and re-installed QT so many times I can't count them. Makes no difference.
The plugin in IE and Firefox works fine - I can view the Metanomics stream without problem in both browsers - but can't see it within SL. Also, cannot view it (or any other stream) when I open QT and drop the link into "File>Open URL".
I've tried the "error 46" solution - doesn't help. I've switched off all firewall - doesn't help.
Anyone else experienced this - and how did you fix it?
Any help MUCH appreciated - if I wasn't bald already I'd have pulled all my hair out by now!

well, I snooped around, and found nothing.. you could try disabling Vista's firewall, that might help (vista's firewall causes problems ever for Vista apps, I turned mine off)

Thanks Saiki - good advice but I've already done that. Thanks for the help anyway - if you come across anything else do let me know.

Actually that's horrible advice. If you turn your firewall off then you waive your right to complain about Microsoft when you get a virus. First thing's first. The latest QuickTime version for 64 bit Windows is 7.5 (861). If you have an older version, Second Life has in the past built in safeguards to not load versions of QuickTime that have known security flaws. So make sure you have the latest version. Also, in the Second Life preferences, make sure that both "play media" options are checked on the "Audio & Video" tab. Media won't play unless this is turned on. Finally, if it still doesn't work and you are up for some diagnostics, go get "Process Explorer" (from SysInternals which was acquired by Microsoft a while back) at the following URL. http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx Then when you have Second Life open and you're at a place where you think parcel media should be playing, open Process Explorer and look for the SecondLife.exe process. Make sure the lower pane view is turned on and set to "DLLs" (View -> [x] Show Lower Pane, View -> Lower Pane View -> [x] DLLs) You should see a bunch of entries that begin with "QuickTime" if it's loading successfully. Let me know how it goes and please, for the good of all mankind, turn your firewall back on.

Thanks Reno - have switched Firewall back on! Both "Play media" tick boxes are ticked. Have downloaded Process Explorer (great programme, by the way). It shows a whole bunch of Quicktime stuff running in the DLL pane - so I guesss it's running fine.
When I encounter streaming media in SL it looks like it tries to play - the default texture is replaced by black and the object says that the media is playing - but I get no video or audio.
Thanks for your help on this - any guidance as to what to try next?

CCN Yifu Check the firewall settings, since you decided to turn it back on. (Vista's firewall doesn't do anyything at all except piss me off, and if you're on a router, its firewall will protect your PC on its own, and I might add, it does a hell of a lot better of a job at it) try it again without? since it seems to play, you could also open "about land" and see if it plays in the "media" tab as well.

But suggesting that other people turn it off is irresponsible and nobody would recommend it. If you think that NAT on a router is the same thing as a firewall, then you may want to research it further. Aside from masquerading, UPNP would also allow holes to be silently poked through NAT. Anyhow like I said, telling someone to turn off their firewall is like telling them to not use condoms or wear a seatbelt. Just because you do it doesn't make it sound advice. And since you brought it up, yes I am a Windows expert. I've been a software developer for the last 13 years and I've been awarded by Microsoft for Windows expertise (Tablet PC in particular) for the last 3 years.

I am on Vista 64 (just installed it cause I just put in 8GB of RAM) and I cannot view QuickTime streams from within SL or the QuickTime player. I don't have my desktop home with me at the moment but I'm gonna try to get to the bottom of it. But one thing that comes to mind - when you say that you got the plugins to work fine in IE/FF, are they 64 bit processes or 32 bit? I know that Vista x64 has both 32 bit and 64 bit IE but I'm wondering if this is a problem with QuickTime when being used from a 32 bit process on a 64 bit machine. It doesn't seem to be a firewall issue at all. Besides the fact that RTSP (the streaming protocol used by Quicktime) is client-initiated, I have the SecondLife.exe process in the exception list so I'll let you know what I come up with.

So you're the one I can thank for that annoying program I did not want but cannot remove as long as I have my Bamboo Fun tablet installed. Okay, Mr Expert, tell me how to remove it......and not remove the program I want. I hate when someone thinks they know what I need on my computer. I'm no expert, but I know what I want. And programs being installed or enabled without my asking are just the ones I will never want. Thank you.
