This weekend starting on sunday all of a sudden, when i move around sl, it gets weird. I try to walk, or fly, it may show my feet moving while i am holding my arrow to move, but my avi does not actually move location until I let go of the arrow, then it is like my avitar skips to the location or in the direction im trying to move. The longer I hold down the button, the further I have advanced on the screen when i finally let go. I have actually started tapping my forward movement key in short bursts so at least when im watching my progression across sl, it seems a bit more lifelike. This just started yesterday. And I see other people moving that way all over the screen and they say they are not experiencing any significant lag.
One other thing, i usually do a disk clean and a defrag weekly, even when it doesnt say I need to. After this started, I cleared my cache's and had it analyze it for a disk clean and I had like 3 gigabytes of files that needed to be cleaned up.. usually it is always under 1 gig.. and that is if i have gone 2 weeks or more since the last time. I cleaned and defragged, and signed in, and it did not improve a thing. I went and re-installed the client, and still I have the same problem. I have never had lag issues of this magnitude before. Did sl do something this weekend that would have created this situation?

Im running the latest client version from the last upgrade. I installed that upgrade originally about a week ago, and it behaved within reason until yesterday the 20th.

my lap top is getting old, but was doing fine until this weekend. Would going back to an old client help until i can upgrade my computer system? and if so where do i find it....

Dell Inspiron 9300
Windows XP
Nvida GeForce Go 6800 Ultra (upgraded the card)
2 GB ram
Intel Pentium M Processor 1.73 GHz

I am going to get a new system, but from reading the stuff lately i want to make sure i dont get something that wont work.

I need to continue with a laptop system. I would also like to keep it simple and buy from Dell as I am at least familiar with them, but if another company offers something that is better, then I can do that. Are there graphics cards and drivers and specific systems I should avoid if my primary reason for upgrading is to be as sl compatible as i possibly can?

Any guideance you can give would be very greatly appreciated.

Thank you from a non techie..

Sounds more like networking issues than comuter issues. Are you on a wired connectionn? If not, you should be. Try www.speakeasy.net and do a network test to Ca. You can post the results. What is your network provider? If your on a DSL, make sure all your phones have filters.
More information networking wise would help

I would say any modern laptop will do. However, just make sure that your video graphics chipset is designed for gaming and not simply for display. You will pay a bit more for a laptop, but it is imperative that your laptop can handle 3D applications very well. So, apart from that, make sure you have at least 2GB of RAM.

As for your problems, if it started happening suddenly on Sunday, did you check for viruses? Trojans? Did you run a virus scanner? A spyware scanner? Did you review all the processes running on your PC? Is there anything unfamiliar running? Anything running taking up too much memory? You can check your processes by right clicking on your taskbar and selecting Task Manager. Here you will see all applications running along with their processes. You'll also find a read out of your memory usage including your virtual memory.

Other than those suggestions, not sure what else to say. Also check your startup folder and see if anything is suddenly loading up that should not be. These programs could be taking up valuable system resources. Also, click Start, go to Run and type: MSCONFIG. Look in your startup tab. Notice anything out of the ordinary that shouldn't be starting up? Also, check the services tab. Review all non-microsoft services and make sure that they are legitimate.

When reviewing startup applications, services and processes, simply use google to learn about what is running on your PC. Check anything that doesn't sound familiar. Good luck!

PS: The poster above me mentioned network issues, but you did not say anything about the your Internet connection. Is everything fine with your connection?

I've noticed that some of the regions that don't have the latest upgrade lag my AO and walking speed. (>_<;)

The Hanja Welcome Area is made up of 4 regions at it's center. Last week I noticed that the upgraded ones behaved nicely where the old ones completely wig out when I'm walking around. (>_<;)

I normally have next to NO packet loss, so I'm sure it's server side. Don't be in such a hurry to blame your own hardware or connection. I even know of one region that won't stay on for more than 2 hours without *poof*ing for a minute... It almost killed a biltz build event last night. We still got it done. (^_^)y

Comcast cable, checked for viruses..

Use Comcast cable...
I have DSL available through AT&T, can switch to the wireless and see if it helps.

I ran my virus checker and cleaned up cookies, no spyware obvious, but will do the other too, see if something is taking up a lot of time.

Thank you so much for your guys help.. my husband is not a gamer person, so he does his best, but getting a new system is sort of something im nervous about.

The newest viewer 1.19x has had some quirky things going on with the camera but that doesn’t sound like what you’re describing. Sometimes it helps to reset your router. Unplug it and wait about 30 seconds then plug it back in.
Your current system seems adequate I suppose. Have you played with the settings in the Graphics tab under Preferences?
See Turley Lindens video tutorial on graphic settings for the newest viewer:

Here is the link to old views:

Finally it sounds like your looking for advise on what to look for in a new SL friendly laptop.
The new HPs are coming with nVidia 8000 series graphic cards
Here’s what I’m looking at:

good luck :)

Sorry for the broken link to the HP notebook Im looking at. It’s the dv6700z series. The Z series comes with the AMD processor and then there is the T series that uses Intel.
If you go to HP.com and find the Notebooks section you should be able to find the ones Im talking about. Both offer the nVidia GeForece 8400M graphics card, and I’ve configured one for under $600 just as a backup so I can SL while on the road. Oh and i should mention that i work part time for HP so that price is with an employee discount :p but still you should be able to CTO one for around $700

Step 1: goto www.speakeasy.net
Step 2: click the 'speed test' in the lower right.
Step 3: Choose San Fran as your test.
Step 4: record your results here for upload/download speeds. You'd want at least 500 both directions I should think. This is an easy way to tell your bandwidth.

You say you have both comcast and DSL? you may want to take your laptop somewhere else and see if you're seeing the same problems. What you describe just seemed like a network problem to me. It could be something else entirely.

o.o thass cool, thanks for saying that. I'm not in need of it, but that's really useful.

I want my schools internet O.O

Upload Speed: 8516 kbps (1064.5 KB/sec transfer rate)

Ran the test

Here are the results.. since i have no clue what is good or not.. what does this mean?

I know not matching is supposed to be bad?

Download Speed: 10001 kbps (1250.1 KB/sec transfer rate)
Upload Speed: 1265 kbps (158.1 KB/sec transfer rate)

so i called Comcast and they got an Upload speed of 358.1KB which according to them is a very normal and expected rate. .they said nothing looks out of the ordinary.

Ok, we changed all the cables just to make sure.. and then i decided to run the processor to watch what happens.. when i have sl open... it shows it is using 100% of my CPU. And when i walk and get the stalls in movement, it also stalled the processor "graph chart" at the same time.

Whatever sl did, i think i finally need to upgrade.
