Ciao, amici!

I'm new to SL & have Panther on an iBook.

Here's the thing: I'm not sure how to maximise my gameplay. I'm afraid that there is significant lag between my movement commands and the reaction on-screen.

Not only that, but it takes a long, long time for SL to finish loading the details. I'm walking around for about fifteen minutes before I can see nearly all objects properly; before that they're zero-detail. I had no idea, for example, that the click-signs in the intro were spinning HANDS: I saw plain green circles. Not to mention my surprise when wham! suddenly I could view text on the signs behind them telling me what that bit teaches!

I won't even mention how long it took before the game (though otherwise normally functional) rendered the flames in the hanging lamps.

I've used different rendering settings to ease the pain plus increasing the live memory cache to 1000MB.

One more bit: I cannot get LETTER commands (like M for shoot the pop-gun or WASD for movement) to work: it just starts typing a message for me to speak out loud.

Anyone else having trouble? Any suggestions on hunting down helps?

The typing thing is easy to fix. Press control + P, select the Chat tab, and go to the bottom of the window, check off the thing about return closing the chat box.

As for the other stuff, the Mac client is still a beta, so, that sort of stuff is bound to happen. I hope they fix it soon! :)

Your symptoms could also be packet loss. If you have a very small or busy connection to the net, or a bad ISP, Second Life's ability to describe the world around you is impaired. Check the meters in the upper right corner of the screen. The second meter from the edge will display real time packet loss from the servers. If you are getting significant packet loss, you can try turning down your network bandwidth usage in the preferences dialog or find a better ISP.
