Textures showing up black?!

Ok, I'm not very technically minded and this may be a REALLY stupid question.... but its driving me nuts and I can't fix the problem so I'm asking you guys instead.

Yesterday my laptop went crazy on me and had to be repaired. All drivers have been reinstalled but on installing and logging into SL, textures (on both clothing and things like posters in shops etc) keep appearing as a solid black colour. It didnt happen before, but everything has being put back exactly as it was before. it seems to be an intermitent problem but is really getting on my nerves now! Has anyone any idea either what the issue is, or how to resolve it?

(please remember in your answers.... not technical! LOL)

can you post your computer specs? SL client Help about SL and copy paste the info?

sounds like a Graphic card/setting issue.

did the lap top over heat, to cause it to go crazy?

I have exactly the same problem. I reinstalled my system yesterday including all drivers and stuff and suddenly some of my cloth paint some bodyparts in solid black (shoes for example paint all my lower body). I cleared cache already and put down all graphic settings, without success. Any more ideas?

My comp:
SL standard viewer & release candidate (both latest versions)
Win Vista32
4GB Ram
Nvidia 8800GTX (178.13 & 177.92 & 175.19 & 174.74 drivers - same issue)
Intel 6600 cpu

wheehee I tested a lot tonight at it got more and more weird.. I will try to put this in words:

I have a Jacket in my inventory. It just covers about half of my upper body if worn. And it is transfer. Okay. I now got two friends into the same skybox as I am in. I wear that Jacket and we all saw me with this Jacket and complete white legs. Now I gave that Jacket to friend #1. When he wore it, I saw a short moment the white legs at him as well. But they disappeared quite soon and the Jacket was looking fine. He never saw white legs at him, neither did friend #2. Now I hand the Jacket to Friend #2. He put it on and has white legs all the time like I have when wearing it. BUT. Both friends see the Jacket as it should (without the white) at Friend #2. When I get it back and wear it after this tryouts, I again have my white legs and both friends also see that..

now.. who can explain this? I am totally puzzled and giving up on this....

I've been running into the same thing since this most recent update (1.20.16)... it's actually a little more interesting than just textures going black. At the moment I'm wearing an oh-so-stylish high-collared shirt/glove ensemble with a trendy inventory window print & screenshot accents.

So far I haven't seen it happen anywhere except my upper body, but it seems pretty persistent there. I can change clothes, rebake, and (usually) end up looking right, but trying to make changes in the appearance editor (sleeve length, etc) doesn't seem to show any results.

I didn't notice anything in the JIRA - may take another look later after I've had some time to try figuring out what's actually going on & whether it's the viewer or my PC about to take a dirtnap.

(XP SP3/AMD X2 5000+/GeForce 8200/3.5Gigs RAM)

I have the same problem only started a few days ago and only happens to my bottom part, when i wear trousers or shorts i have black legs and if i go into edit nothin happens if i am tryin to lenghen or shorten the item. i have looked at every thing on my pc but i havnt had any other problems with my pc or changed anything. it only seems to have started since th new upgrade of sl. If anyone knows how to fix this problem please help as i have a lot of clothes i just cant wear because of this problem.

I reopened this issue. It was stated as resolved...

same is happening to me,ws told was a driver prob

I wish I could answer 100% but I am about 75% sure its driver related... I was running 175.0 and had similar.. went all the way back to 169.???
but this is a 7000series card and XP, there's something bad with the drivers , 8000series and I think as well Vista.. maybe a forum search for your card 8800 or what ever it is..

as I get time I will look, because I will be running a Vista 32 with the Nvidia 8800GT in a couple weeks as welland seting it up for the wife, I don't want her to have any issues

Bats: "trendy inventory window print & screenshot accents." lol can I use this in my sig its to funny (well not really) I have this...the Jira is still open,
after a re bake only it should fix.

I only get it if I minimize the Client. but when it first happened to me I think I only needed to open FireFox or what ever oon top of the client in max window...
In fact I would get IM window shirt and win amp pants... I never did check to see if it was only viewr side or if others saw as well...

I'm running on the new (9/25) 178.13 drivers, but (for a change) I'm reluctant to throw the blame at nVidia, since the trouble only cropped up after I started using the 1.20.16 viewer - and seems (crossing fingers, toes & eyes) to have disappeared since I switched over to RC4.

Now I just need to adjust to the blue text, and figure out why my UI seems so fond of growing whenever I change graphics settings...

As a note, rebaking seemed erratic at best... I eventually got on a long-sleeved jacket to cover my screensh[o|ir]t, and then my legs went all-white & stayed that way through repeated changes of pants & rebakes. At that point I decided to pretend they were cheaply made white jeans & run with it - and apparently most of this at least was visible in-world (minus some of the more awkward moments experimenting in private).

Yeah same here, happening with shoe bases turns my entire legs black no matter whgat show or boot base I wear and nothing seems to change it for me, most annoying!

IN SL Viewer turn off palletized textures to get there advanced / rendering / features /
or use ctrl alt F7

I am having the same sort of problem with certain clothes ie:i wear a shirt and my whole upper body becomes the shirt color

I have looked for advanced / rendering / features / without luck and have pressed ctrl alt F7 and nothing happens have they removed this option in the latest release of SL ?

my basic specs are
pentium D 930
bfg nvidia 7800 gtx 512
2 gig corsair matched memory

UPDATE:I have found the advanced menu "which is ctrl+alt+D" and have turned off palletized textures and deselected hardware skinning and still have the same problem ,however if i select a different shoe shape from another outfit the problem goes away so my advice to anyone having this problem is try other shoe shapes until you find one that 1)fits the shoes you are wearing and 2)fixes the color glitch

Add me to this list. Lower half of me is all black textured and nothing I wear - skin or clothing changes it.

It appeared from the 17x.xx Drievrs of Nvidia back in June this Year, so after i figured that SL was messed with newer Drivers and caused by myx RL i took a longer break from SL.

Logged in back several Days back, with 180.xx Drivers, the Problem is still there.

Why Linden isnt able to adjust SL to newer Drivers ?..other Companies and Firms are needing for such small things max up to 1-2 Weeks.

Somehow I thought the advanced menu was displayed by default in the recent viewer releases... maybe it was just changed so it wouldn't be shut off on quit...

Either way, what I've found is that I generally after logging in, I have to turn off palletized textures and then rebake... so C-A-F7 + C-A-R, rather than just C-A-F7.


Irritating... but if the Lindens suddenly took away all the annoyances, would it still feel like SL? Forget about mainland "clustering," _these_ are the things that truly bring us together as a community.

I had this problem with updating my nvidia drivers. There is a problem with 177 and 178 series drivers. I rolled all the way back to 175.16 and its sorted. Was concerned, some said skin got corrupted, so test with a freebie skin. Guru.com has old drivers.

Ive just downloaded the new drivers - guess what DIDNT WORK

Ive had this problem for around 2 weeks now and its doing my head in, clothes i make and also ones ive bought all appear black or white and half the time i lose my boots as well !!!!
