what kind of fps do people get with a 8800gtx and dual core in second life? I think it's crazy i have to keep view distance down to 256 to get 10 - 15fps in heavy prim places. Also noticed its not very well written for dual cores or more since only 1 cpu has the load a majority of the time.
Also i noticed the sticky up top but no one answered my question about what SL is suppose to look like if it is working with all shaders and stuff. anyone have pics comparing? It seems to look fine to me, but i never seen it any other way.

i have the 8800GT stock on a P4 prescott 3.0Ghz stock with 2GB ram and i still keep the quality settings at the lowest possible settings, why ? i prefer to have acceptable FPS at a draw distance of 1024 instead of the card and mostly the CPU choking away at fine graphic details, i prefer to see further away since im using a different type of SL client that utilizes the draw distance in rendering an avatar list, sort of like the avatar radar script, except its based on further draw distance beyond the 96 meter limit. (im upgrading to a quad soon anyhow since my only bottleneck is the CPU/board/bus speed)answering your question: the difference you would see is mostly in the detail of trees, grass, water, sky and objects. clothes on avatars would flap around in the wind while flying, objects would be shiny and bumpmapped and round. but then again, i have a different purpose and reason to be on SL where caring about detail is meaningless to me.

Sort of a late reply...
I run an 8800GTX, average about 80fps (draw distance 128 usually (do I really want to see skyboxes? :p), most graphics stuff on/max'd, although rippled water is off just cuz I don't like it). Downfall is SL runs like crap on dual-cores and with Vista 64, extremely jittery, often locks up for 1-5seconds... fps is always solid though, so must be some other issue. Course SL's always run like crap. One would think after this many years I'd notice a change, nope, same as day one!
system: Vista 64 (premium/builders) EVGA 8800GTX E6850 core2duo 4G DDR2 (2x2G/800mhz) Asus P5N32-E mboard yadda yadda
Unfortunately I apparently can't alter the affinity for SL, it's locked and thus far I haven't figured out how to unlock it, so that very well could be one of my jitter-issues.
I have to say, SL isn't the only "game" I have that has issues with Vista64, every -- EVERY DX10 game I've tried has issues (from mild to extreme). Most things that run in DX9 (SL included) run great though. EVGA's drivers > nVidia's, imho (same driver just tweaked in-house by evga) so if you do get a new card, I suggest trying various drivers and not just the stock ones from nVidia.
Guess I'm ranting more about Vista than talking about my graphics card. I still daily consider re-installing XP. :p I'm just soooo lazy.

I have an 8800gtx on a duel core and on Vista 32bit Home Premium. I get better performance with Vista than I did with xp on the same machine although not earth shattering better, maybe 10 fps on a good day. I also have been using the Windlight client since it was re released last year. With 8x AA filtering and a draw of 198 I can usually maintain 30-80 fps (average 38fps) even having all the visuals maxed out on the client. Turning everything down i can easily hit a 100 fps but it looks crappy. Eye candy for the win.
You will need to tell SL to use multiple cores to get the benefit of having multiple cpu's by going to the Advanced menu (client menu in older releases) go to Rendering and select Run Multiple Threads. I typically get a 10-15 fps boost by turning this on. Also, make sure you have the latest drivers for everything, including the motherboard chip sets.

I also am using an Nvidia 8800 GTX and I am unable to enable the Bump Mapped & Cloth option or the Bump Mapped option. Also- in First Look viewer i can't even enable Ripple Water or Avatar Vertex program!!! This has been frustrating me for quite some time, SL looked better on my old ATI card. I am also running Vista.
Has anyone else had these problems as well?

Oh, you need to use the Windlight or the new RC1 client rather than the official client when using the 8800gtx, the drivers don't work correctly with the official release client right now, nor does it work for the Dazzle release either. Try the RC1 and you should be amazed at the difference.

Forget about DirectX.. SL is an OpenGL platform v2.
There are no benefits from any advances in DirectX drivers, period.
