Can't be in SL since my network stats dropped down a couple of weeks ago, so I use some of that time to understand how the routing works. I have used WinMTR to monitor the routing and the speed drops down as soon as it reaches the first 'us.above.net.' and there are 5 of them before reaching Linden Lab, all located around the same area, I tracked down the IP-numbers. Here's the list:

IP Address Hostname: so-0-1-0.mpr2.dca2.us.above.net
IP Country: United States
IP Region: New York
Guessed City: White Plains
ISP Provider: ABOVENET COMMUNICATIONS

IP Address Hostname: so-1-0-0.mpr4.iah1.us.above.net
IP Country: United States
IP Region: New York
Guessed City: White Plains
ISP Provider: ABOVENET COMMUNICATIONS

IP Address Hostname: so-1-1-0.mpr2.dfw2.us.above.net
IP Country: United States
IP Region: New York
Guessed City: White Plains
ISP Provider: ABOVENET COMMUNICATIONS

IP Address Hostname: xe-1-1-0.er2.dfw2.us.above.net
IP Country: United States
IP Region: New York
Guessed City: White Plains
ISP Provider: ABOVENET COMMUNICATIONS

IP Address Hostname: 64.124.146.2.allocated.above.net
IP Country: United States
IP Region: New York
Guessed City: New York
ISP Provider: CCG.XM

IP Address Hostname: sim2240.agni.lindenlab.com
IP Country: United States
IP Region: California
Guessed City: San Francisco
ISP Provider: LINDEN LAB

Why so many us.above.net, and all located in the same area, is this normal? Can anyone explain this too me, so many routers, no wonder the speed is so low. Is this normal when you connect from Europe? How does the routing look like for ppl in the US and other European countries?

Btw, I've used 3 different Swedish Internet Service Providers during these weeks and the result was the same with all 3, using winMTR. So it's NOT my ISP.

They are possibly not all in one region. That is just data entered by the admins that configured them.

See http://www.abovenet.com/maps/index.php for a map of their network and a bit about their services. It looks like three transatlantic lines are run by AboveNet, and your signal is getting routed through their backbone to get from London or the Netherlands to California. They show up because many ISPs use their cables from Europe to the US.

Thank you :)

Btw. The ISP I have now use the backbone from London, the other 2 from the Netherlands and the stats are about the same. Even though my current ISP claimed they had the best peering across the Atlantic and across the US, the stats shows about the same, not much difference.

The above.net stuff is normal, that and Level 3 are LL's primary pipes out to the internet.

BUT!!! I haven't had any issues with the network stats until recently, it started a couple of weeks ago, so something must have changed, happened... but what?

The problem could very well be within abovenet, lots of people and the grid itself have been having various troubles like that for the last few days.
