now every time I open up the viewer it asks me to download the updated viewer even though I already had downloaded and installed it twice.. and if I do NOT download and reinstall the viewer update it wont let me open SL.

I'd start by uninstalling Second Life, then deleting the settings.xml file, then reinstalling SL.
Instuctions on finding the settings.xml file can be found in http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/User:Waya_Sion You might also want to delete the user specific settings files, which are also discussed there. _____________________
