Ive had a problem all weekend, i log on, and my bandwidth rapidly spikes to around 800 KBPS and then dropps to 2-3 KBPS and then after around five minutes it doesnt recover from the 2-3 KBPS and drops to zero, ive reset my Cable modem several times, talked to comcast, (my ISP) and they told me they werent having ant problems recently, so, whats up?

I'm lucky - my ISP might have trouble with bugs in the software, but at least they don't suffer from ant problems.

Remember that with cable broadband, you are on a LAN with others in your neighborhood, and share bandwidth with them. It could be that one of your neighbors is using up the shared bandwidth. Maybe someone is running a web server. Maybe someone caught a virus and is now either sending out lots of email, or launching DOS attacks.

Cyanide, I believe the problem you are experiencing is due to something Comcast added to their network. About a month or a month and a half ago, they upgraded so cable modems are now capped at 3mb instead of 1.5mb. Ever since then, my entire cable node has been having issues like you describe.
When I log into SL, I see the exact behavior you describe and I am also on the comcast network. Set your bandwidth to 100 or 200kbps and the problem will be a lot less noticeable, but you will still notice the behavior from time to time. When I had mine set at 300 or higher, SL was completely unusable. at 1-200 it's bearable. The problem seems to come about any time anyone fires up something that uses 2-300kbps+ UDP streams... the entire node's performance drops right into the toilet. That means that if I crank the bandwidth up on SL, 170 customers' internet access is pretty much non-existent. Likewise, if someone else on my node does something with similar packets, my internet connection dies even if I'm not using SL. As far as I can tell by talking to comast's support, they have absolutely no intention of fixing this behavior. _____________________

I'm having the same problem on Adelphia lately. It started happening about 1-2 weeks ago, at the same time the telehubs started acting up, and the same time some people started to report recieving tons of bad data to their clients.
It seems a bit coincidential all these are happening at the same time... |
