When I log in it stops at connecting to region. Does anybody have an idea on what I should do or what I have to do.

hi there,
Yes, please post more infos ! Your current system configuration (Help -> About Second Life -> copy and paste the first lines describing your system), your connection type, bandwidth and if you're behind a router, a modem or if you use a dedicated line. If it stops at "connecting to region" it might be a handshake problem, depending on ya router configuration...but that's only a guess so far. _____________________

CPU: AMD (Unknown model) (2004 MHz) Memory: 958 MB OS Version: Microsoft Windows Vista (Build 6000) Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation Graphics Card: GeForce 6150 LE/PCI/SSE2/3DNOW! OpenGL Version: 2.1.2 That's all I got. I'm not the original poster of this, but I am having the same problem so I decided I would ask you for help. I can't tell you much about the bandwidth or the router, but I am connected through a cable/comcast internet connection. Not dial up or satellite or anything. I hate to bother you, but I really want to play this game. I'm a nooby... Please help! |

I can't tell you much about the bandwidth or the router, but I am connected through a cable/comcast internet connection. Not dial up or satellite or anything. I hate to bother you, but I really want to play this game. I'm a nooby... Please help! For a Vista machine you are working with a pretty minimal spec'd computer. Your RAM is just barely enough to run your operating system. Vista requires nearly 1 gig all by itself (I believe the number is something like 800 megs) and SL requires 500 megs. You only have 1 gig. Your graphics card is pretty much just a basic "enough to get by" card for common graphics programs and games (no onboard video RAM).........you would not be able to run Photohop or GIMP successfully either with that card. Sorry, but even though your system "meets" the minimum requirements listed on the website it falls short on being powerful enough to actually work for SL...........at least in a satisfactory way. I believe the answer to your problem (short of getting a more powerful computer) would be to get, at least, another gig of RAM and shop for another video card in the 7000 or 8000 series for nVidia. RAM is pretty cheap right now. And with a little shopping you should be able to find a nice higher performance graphics card for under about $50 USD. The draw back to getting a higher performance card is that they require, at least a 350 watt power supply.........and on your machine I'd bet you are 100 watts short of that. This is what I think (I'm no computer whiz) is necessary in order to get SL to run in a relatively satisfactory way.......it's strictly my opinion (reached the hard way......experience). A couple things you can try that may allow you to at least get in the game. Turn off all Vista's "bells and whistles"........that Aero stuff. You do that by going to your control panel and "System Performance".........set it for performance instead of quality. If you have an nVidia control panel.........set the card for performance too. On the log in page for SL, before you attempt to log in go to preferrences and set your graphics to minimum. If your computer is networked and connects to the internet through a router try rebooting it........and while you're at it reboot the modem too. Make sure your firewall is not blocking SL. Go to: http://www.speedtest.net/ Run a couple tests to various test sites (at least one each to San Francisco and Dallas). You will probably not reach your ISP's advertised speed but you should be somewhere above 50% of what they claim you have. If you are near or below that 50% threshold, call them.....they could be contributing to your problems. If you share an internet connection with another computer in your home try connecting to SL with that other computer shut down or offline.......if possible try using that computer to get on SL. Sorry, my post is not the best of news. I've tried to lay out what I think might be the problems as best I could. Merry Christmas, Peggy. |

Sorry, my post is not the best of news. I've tried to lay out what I think might be the problems as best I could. Merry Christmas, Peggy. Meh, it's fine. My cousin tried to tell me the same thing. I'll just stick to World of Warcraft. At least this computer can handle that. ![]() Merry Christmas to you as well.... And a happy new years! Edit: xD One more note, this computer must be better than given credit for. It actually does handle Gimp. I needed a photo editor at one time, so I downloaded gimp and it was working perfectly. Either way, I know it's a crappy computer. I bet if I took off WoW I could probably get it to run, though it's just not worth it. Thank you for your help. ^.^ |
