Can't ALT-click Zoom on objects after ATI driver update

I have an ATI 2900XT card and it seems like I have all of the usual ATI issues with SL. In trying to get rid of the terrible lag issues that occur periodically, I realized my driver at 8.2 was several versions behind the current (8.7) so I cheerfully updated to it. First thing I noticed was the same thing my wife's computer has - the menu text is distorted slightly. No big deal there for me.. So I seem to have a slight improvement from the extreme frame rate drops that occur sometimes but I have a new problem and it is TERRIBLE!

I build objects so I use a lot of ALT-Click mouse camera controls. Well with this new driver, after a few minutes of using SL, the ALT-Click stops working correctly on objects. For avatars it continues to work however. What it's doing is acting like you are trying to click on an object through a window. When you go to zoom or pan, the point is fixed in space between yourself and the object. If I log out and back in, the problem goes away for several minutes.

Now for the bad news... I rolled back to 8.6 and it's still doing it. I'm working my way back to laggy 8.2 and I just *hope* it will correct itself. I'll take the frame rate drops, but without mouse camera control, I'm out of the building business.

Anyone else seen this?

I'm on XP Pro, 2 GB, Core 2 Duo, latest SL client

Just a follow-up on this problem. I completely uninstalled the drivers and Catalyst control center and went down to 8.4 drivers. So far I haven't had the mouse camera control problems any more. Hoping it stays that way!

I have found deleting the SL Viewer's preference folder and letting it rebuild them often seems to resolve this issue. The folder can be found at:

C:\Documents and Settings\<your account>\Application Data\SecondLife\user_settings

Where <your account> is the login name you sign into windows with. Delete that folder then start up the viewer. Note that this will cause all your settings to be reset to defaults. However, seems to fix the camera issue. :)
