Hello people. I've been having this problem where I get disconnected whenever I try and teleport. I've read the knowledge base and searched the forum and believe the problem is that I'm unable to open port 443 which is 'defined by another service,' https i believe. I wonder if this problem only applies to netgear routers? if there is a way to change the port secondlife uses? or any other way to resolve this problem? I've tried to submit a ticket with the support guys but its been weeks and still no reply! Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Where do you get the phrase "defined by another service" from?
What operating system are you using?
What model is the Router?
What kind of internet service?
What version of Second Life? Have you tried alternate viewers?

Hi Chaos, welcome to the forums! Do you get disconnected every single time you try to teleport, or just most of the time? To answer your questions, there is no way to change the ports that SL uses. Also, Netgear routers have no troubles with port configurations (their weaknesses are many but that's not one of them ). I think the message you refer to just means that port 443 is already open, though I'm not sure about that. Suezanne above is actually the author of a page on how to configure the ports on different routers: http://suezannecbaskerville.wordpress.com/second-life-firewalls-routers-ports-udp-tcp/I think her question above indicates that she thinks the problem lies elsewhere, and I think so too. However, your instinct that it is your network is probably correct. Teleporting is rather network-intensive --- are you on wireless? Try testing your download speed at www.dslreports.com/speedtest; you need at least 300kb/sec to be able to walk around in SL. Also, pls. post your machine specs (in SL, you get a nice summary in the Help/About page). .

Note: I am not the author of the page mentioned above, the text is taken straight from the Second Life Knowledge Base article. I put it there because it is needed to solve many reported problems and the SL Knowledge Base is neither Google findable nor easily linked to.

Thanks for the prompt reply. I get disconnected whenever I try and teleport without exception I have run speed checks from http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest?flash=1. dont think thats the problem as download speed reads 717kb/s. It is however a wireless connection. I'm using a netgear DG834GT Router on Sky Broadband. I assumed that Second Life 1.21.6 was the most resent version. Is it worth trying previous releases? I got the error message "defined by another service" when I enter the router settings (security>settings) and and try and open the service for port 443 tcp. Is there a way to check which ports are currently open? System spec: Second Life 1.21.6 (99587) Oct 14 2008 17:42:25 (Second Life Release) Release Notes CPU: Intel Core Series Processor (1596 MHz) Memory: 2047 MB OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 (Build 2600) Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation Graphics Card: GeForce Go 7200/PCI/SSE2 OpenGL Version: 2.0.1 libcurl Version: libcurl/7.16.4 OpenSSL/0.9.7c zlib/1.2.3 J2C Decoder Version: KDU LLMozLib Version: [LLMediaImplLLMozLib] - 2.01.21431 (Mozilla GRE version 1.8.1.13_0000000000)

From: Joy Ohmai I have the same issue as the OP. Is there no one who can solve this? Does that mean you also have a Netgear DG834GT? ' Are you also on Sky Broadband? To clarify matters, 1. Is Sky Broadband is a cable, dsl, or a satellite internet provider?, 2. The connection from the "the box" to the computer is also a wireless network. Can a DG834GT be hooked up with a cable?

Same Problem
01-31-2009 16:47
I been around SL For a long while, and just today, this problem is happening. No previous problems before. I think there is something wrong on the serverside, affecting a small amount of users on a certain database. I will let LL know via support portal. I checked grid status and everything is said to be fine, but 99% of the time when I TP, I get logged out today. Sounds like a server issue to me.

Chaos, you say you've "been having" this problem... for how long? Days? Months? Did things work correctly prior to the start of this problem with the same ISP, router, computer, version of SL, etc?

Same here.
PC - Top of the range custom build Intel Quadcore with top of the range Nvidia Games card ISP: Sky
I can log in fine. speed does not seem to be an issue. Tonight, I have manage to teleport once. I have tried to teleport to various locations ranging from close to far, all failed. SL crashes and I get logged out.
I have also tried to follow the advice laid out - nothing
I was online last night - failed failed failed failed failed. then suddenly - did not fail. And actually worked perfectly. No idea why, but it was the early hours of the morning
The problem for me started at the weekend. Sunday I think

same problem

It seems that ever since I installed the latest RC, I can't teleport 75% of the time. I either get the message saying "unable to teleport at this time" or whatever ( I can't remember the exact words), and if I try about 3 times, then I get disconnected. It doesn't matter what region I'm in, nor where I'm trying to teleport to. I try to teleport home first, and usually I can't even go there either. I don't know why the viewer would have anything to do with this ..I'm pretty sure it doesn't ..but it just seems that it's been doing this since I installed the newest one. I do have friends using the regular viewer and they have this same problem. The grid status says nothing about this, but it's been going on for well over a week. This is VERY annoying! Somebody mentioned that it could be a server affecting only select accounts. This sounds like a good possibility. I just hope LL figures it out before I shoot my monitor. ><

To clarify matters,
1. Is Sky Broadband is a cable, dsl, or a satellite internet provider?,
2. The connection from the "the box" to the computer is also a wireless network.
Can a DG834GT be hooked up with a cable? DG834GT looks to be a ADSL modem/router .. so it must be DSL... hooked up with a cable? instead of wireless? why? Wireless works well unless there is little to no signal, and tested at 700k download speed, which is fast enough, it shouldn't be a speed issue. Even the very slow old 802.11b could get up to 11mbps, well over the 700k of the test. What we need to know more is what is the rated speed of the connection. Being Sky and tests at 700ish, i'd say its a cheaper low end 768k connection. Its very unlikely wireless is an issue, but when troubleshooting it never hurts to test otherwise at least once to see if symptoms change.
