thanks! That graphics card will put an end to your SL experience. Intel Graphics Media Accelerator 3100 = No more SL. I just bought a Dell XPS 420 and it runs great. If you are going to get a Dell, look at the XPS 420 or the Vostro - both have about 6 expansion slots and come with ATi or nVidia graphic cards and are upgradeable.

The x3100 will work. You'll have to run SL on low graphics settings, and you should expect to get between 10 and 25 frames per second. Not great by any stretch, but acceptable for some people.

It will not be anywhere near as fast as your 9600 but it will be a lot better than the 3100. My second machine has ATI integrated 780G graphics right on the motherboard, which is about the same as the 2400 Pro, and it performs remarkably well with SL, and a dedicated card with 256MB would be even better.

(To put things in perspective, full motion video in the film industry is achieved at 24 fps.) I would anticipate 3-5fps with Intel graphics, on a GOOD day. If you want anything approaching a decent SL experience, stay the hell away from Intel graphics. P2

Intel graphics (onboard chips and cards) do not support OpenGL, SL is an OpenGL platform.

P2 Actually video is 29 frames, 16-35mm film is about 24 frames, and the frames in Secondlife, from what I know are totally different and not really comparable to film frames.

Some areas will get me down to 6-8. Very rarely will I see 3-5.

From: AWM Mars Intel graphics (onboard chips and cards) do not support OpenGL, SL is an OpenGL platform. The Intel GMA 900, 950, 3000 and 3100 support OpenGL 1.4. The GMA x3000 and x3100 support OpenGL 1.5. The GMA x3500 and x4500 support OpenGL 2.0. So yes, OpenGL, and thus, SL, is supported (officially on the GMA 950 and above).

From: Atom Burma Actually video is 29 frames, 16-35mm film is about 24 frames, and the frames in Secondlife, from what I know are totally different and not really comparable to film frames. The NTSC standard is 29.97 frames per second. PAL (alternative to NTSC used in some countries) uses 25 frames per second (and has more horizontal lines). SECAM is also 25 frames per second, and is another alternative. Film can be anything, but movies are almost always run at 24 frames per second. There's no limitation preventing movies from being shown at other frame rates (except lower frame rates are noticeable, and higher frame rates use more film, meaning bigger spools, and spools are already big). All frame rates are comparable to all other frame rates. A frame rate is merely the number of still frames being shown every second, thus leading to a "moving" picture. So yes, SL's frame rate is comparable to broadcast televisions and films.

I think the GMA3100 can do OGL 1.4. I think the GMA3100 is associated with the G31 express chipset. Check http://www.intel.com/support/chipsets/sb/CS-028169.htm to see if that's correct.

Needless to say, you could probably get the vast majority of graphic chips to run SL to some degree, however OpenGL is up to version 2.1, thats like comparing Windows 95 to Vista. The OP was asking if a shiny new chip QUOTE "the question is....this dell comes with this video card ' ntel® Graphics Media Accelerator 3100
i wanna know if u guys know anything about it and if it will work on sl !" UNQUOTE.
Whilst the answer maybe a 'yes', it should really be, save your money, upgrade that GC now before you have to very shortly and enjoy the SL experience.
