Yay I can post now! (to those who know what i'm talking about) Anyways, my problem is this... fps. I know it still beta but i'm getting smoked in FPS by comps that are way slower then mine. What's the problem? I did speak to Phoenix and Andrew (lindens) about this ( they told me to tell this to Doug). So here is the story. #1 1000Mb cache does not work with XP. It makes the game hang when precaching. #2 When I turn OFF AGP ACC my FPS go UP about 2 to 5. So i'm thinking that my GF2 GTS 64meg DDR is not working at ALL! I also have 1 gig of RAM to brun!!! But when I spoke with Jen Linden she was running a 900 on like 256 ram with a 32 meg card and blowing me out of the water in FPS like 20+ at least! I was getting like 3 FPS and she was getting like 28. I would just like to know if i'm being stupid with my graph settings. And yes I have the latest Nvidia drivers and my AGP card is running 4X. So I was wondering if anyone had any ideas!

If Jennifer's card is a GF3, that could be an explanation. I've noticed the regardless of the system-its the video card that can hang it up. You said you had a GF2? Maybe there is the issue?

Charlie.. you might be right... but that just sucks! I would expect maybe 25 to 50% (50 BIG MAX) drop but not like 80% that's a problem somewhere... has to be!

Hey - I have a GF3 - 933 and I haven't updated my drivers cuz I'm lazy. Note my fps ranges very widely. There are days I can get 25 fps, there are days I get 2. There was a day once where spiked to 50 fps but I may have been haluccinating.

It depends, for me, largely on sims, crowds, and the num of objects in the immediate area. Sometime I can't apply any of those factors and its just slow. I used to have a GF2 and when I upgraded there was massive fps increase.

Theres my 2 cents.
:D

Nexus,

If you get _better_ FPS when you disable AGP acceleration in your preferences, then you probably aren't getting AGP acceleration at all, and something is wrong with your motherboard chipset drivers.

I asked one of the other developers about your low FPS issues and his guess was that you have the VIA 4-in-1 chipset in your motherboard.

If you do have that chipset you should install the latest drivers from VIA, or more likely from your motherboard manufacturer.

Cut and pasted from another post on the forums:

"Have you installed the latest VIA 4-in-1 drivers? The VIA 4-in-1 drivers in general greatly improve the stability and performance of Second Life."

Slow performance causes

If you're getting better performance when you disable AGP acceleration, that usually means that you don't have the correct motherboard drivers for your OS to enable AGP use by the video card driver.

The two most common motherboard chipsets that have this problem are VIA, and some of the older (or more unusual) Intel motherboards.

As Andrew mentioned, for VIA, there's a set of drivers called 4-in-1 drivers that help with this.

For Intel, there's something called the Intel chiputil which will identify and install the correct drivers.

You'll want to go to your motherboard manufacturer's site to make sure you get the right ones.

Oh, and also, sometimes we're just really slow. I'm working on it. :)

OK, I'm stumped...

If you could send a copy of your SecondLife.log file (Should be in c:\SecondLife.log) to support@secondlife.com, with a brief description of what's going on, I'll be able to take a look at it and get a better idea of what's happening.

Yeah, we only need the first 100 or so lines of the logfile. We're interested in the messages printed as the application starts. You could login for only about 30 seconds and then send the resulting small log.
