I've been on the Win7x64 RC since it came out. Moving from XP, it's been a dream with SL. I've seen an 80% to 100% increase in framerate in some locations and other 3D apps almost never impact how SL runs. Running multiple clients have become ever more seamless. The bloody thing feels crash and lag resistant. (^_^)y

But what do you do when the Final Release comes out and they stop making the previous versions work in August? The RC will be fully functional until next March. _____________________

Personally, I think Microsoft should give everyone who has suffered and slogged through Vista a substantial discount on Windows 7. Substantial, like -- free!
Of course, they will still have to pry Ubuntu Linux out of my cold, dead hands! ![]() _____________________

Hmm, I'm using the Windows 7 RC too (having previously used XP) and my performance is somewhere between "the same" to "slightly worse."

Personally, I think Microsoft should give everyone who has suffered and slogged through Vista a substantial discount on Windows 7. Substantial, like -- free! There's absolutely nothing wrong with Vista, as long as you have adequate hardware to support it. The bad rap it got was from early reviewers, who had two serious handicaps. First, most hardware wasn't yet up to snuff to run Vista properly. Second, almost no Windows reviewer on the planet was then equipped to understand the fundamental changes to memory management that Vista introduced. As a result, they would routinely report their "observations" of Vista as a "resource hog", when in fact it was simply managing resources differently, not more poorly, than previous versions of Windows. The reviewers just didn't know how to interpret what they were looking at. In truth, Vista's resource management is far, far superior to that of all previous Windows versions. Also, the 64-bit version of Vista is an entirely different animal than the 32-bit version. The 32-bit version does tend to chug a bit. To shine, the OS really needs more resources than 32-bit architecture can throw at it. What I find hilarious in all the buzz about Windows 7 as "the solution to Vista's problems" is that almost no one bothers to mention that 7 essentially IS Vista. It's got a few more bells & whistles, sure, and some features have been refined, and a few behaviors tweaked, but under the hood, it's the same engine. MS has been brilliant in driving the hype. Rather than continue to fight a losing battle trying to correct all the unfair reviews of Vista from so many years ago that still linger on to this day, they've capitalized on them, and are now using them to their own advantage. Well played. Is this deal written in stone? http://blogs.zdnet.com/microsoft/?p=1791 It's probably legit. It's very typical whenever a new version of Windows is about to come out, that PC makers will start to offer free upgrade vouchers with current machine purchases. It's how they keep customers from putting off purchasing decisions. Otherwise, PC sales would plummet whenever a new OS is announced, as customers would decide to wait for it rather than buy now. The key to all selling is getting the customer to make a yes or no decision today, rather than an "I'll think about it" or "I'll get it later", which is no decision at all. _____________________

The only problem I had with Windows 7 is that SL worked on my old ATI card with Windows XP, with Windows 7 it no longer worked. The ATI drivers for Windows 7 have much to be desired.

Don't forget that Windows 7 is a RC version right now....so you will have driver issues until the manufacturers catch up. |

Totally agree with Chosen Few.
And to expand it a bit.. it's even more true that Windows 7 IS Vista, cause Vista can be considered the RC of W7. they were developing Vista to be what W7 is now, but marketing forced them to push out a release that was far from complete. They kept working on it, ending up with what probably is the most thoroughly tested RC around, at least in recent times. In my opinion, Windows 7 will not disappoint anyone (well, maybe the 3.11 die-hards that still whine about the changes from 2000 to XP). Another point of interest is.. Vista drivers works PERFECTLY on W7. there's no compatibility issue in upgrading your computer to the next release, if you had it running vista already. (and thinking about that.. people should have updated to it from a long time, or keep sticking with their XP if they want to hold dear the 7 years old computer they have.. but understanding that is their own fault if a new OS runs crappy on their computer, and not whine and blame it on poor code work from MS.. Innovation. Like when we got the whiners who cried "Bwaa, my Celeron 500 is not going to be enough to run SL anymore! And I'll have to upgrade my S3 Virge!" ) So.. if you have some issue with the W7 beta drivers.. do try with Vista drivers. it worked like a charm for my nVidia.. the first W7 beta driver was pure fail (luckily they got way better now, and it doesn't crashes anymore for me). Back on topic a bit more: I'll join the chorus.. SecondLife + Windows 7 = PERFECT! Yay for symlinks of the various SecondLife's %appdata% folders (I run a variety of third party viewers) into a single centralized folder without any OS issue =) Vista used to have some headaches with it, W7 works flawlessly!
