Crashes

Ok, i barely need to type anything for this problem. Simply, i cant even log in i get the page where you input the SL names and password then i get some little pop up thing which looks like:

thats all i need to say, i dont do anything else after clicking the link. ive uninstalled and installed again but got the same results.

That pop up is crash logger.

What are your computer specs? It might help someone help you with your problem.

what do you mean by specs?

also i was once on SL, but suddenly this happened one day. Forgot to mention that it used to be fine.

noob of a question but...how do i find out all that info?

Launch SL and once you get to the log in screen go to preferrences (under Edit menu button). At the bottom of the window that opens click "about". That will list the pertinant information for your computer. Copy that and paste it back here.

i dont get time, a second after the areas where you type in names and password appear, thats when it crashes so i dont get enough time to go through all that

It's crashing before you attempt to log in............sorry, thought it crashed when you pressed connect.

Try uninstalling one more time and before you reinstall do a search of your computer and manually delete anything related to SL. And another thing I've found when installing any downloaded program is save to your hard drive and install from there......don't use auto installers from websites.

Hopefully, it's as simple as that. What operating system are you using? If it's vista I will try to walk you through now to get the information.

The easiest way to tell you is to go to your contol panel and open "System". You'll have to hand copy since Windows won't let you copy/paste. Write down your version of Windows including any service packs. And on the "System" section write down everything listed.......it's not much. We don't need to know anything about the rest of the information there.........it's just person stuff not related to anything haveing to do with your problem.

Next, go to the "Device Manager" (it's in the control panel too) and find "display adapter". Expand that and you will see your graphics card. Write that down. Then double click on it and on the window that pops up open the "driver" tab. That will tell you what driver version you are using.......write it down.

And tell us here.

thats right isnt it? also i uninstalled SL again but i dunno what to use to search for any SL files left over

There's a newer driver out. Try updating to see if that helps.

Yes, that's right. To search for SL files: Start > Search> type in Second Life

Let the search go and delete everything it finds that is game related. Then do it again only type SL.

There is always a chance something else might have a name Second Life or a combination of the words.......so check that it is Second Life the game before deleting.

ok, there were no other files, the only one was the one for installing SL.

After uninstalling and deleting any temp files, delete the installer.

Then clear your browsers temporary Internet files.

Then redownload the installer.

It's possible that the installer you downloaded was corrupt.

well it was fine when i first got SL, but ok ill do that

no luck. i did all that was said and it still had the same results

I have the EXACT same problem. SL worked just fine for me last weekend and again at some point during this week. Now it crashes every time I start it. Even after a complete reinstall from Second_Life_1-19-1-4_Setup.exe.

Nikki, have you tried changing your ATi display driver to the newer version 8.5? (Get it here if you haven't: http://game.amd.com/us-en/drivers_catalyst.aspx?p=vista32/common-vista32) It isn't very relevant for me, because I have XP, not Vista, but it might help me decide. I'd really hate having to reinstall the driver though, because I want to run something else that I've clearly confirmed doesn't work well with v8.5.

In order to install the new driver you first have to uninstall the old one, from Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs, where you remove "ATI Catalyst Control Center" and "ATI Display Driver", and then run the .exe from the link I gave you above.

Any other suggestions are welcome.

Help me I log on and its fine and then suddenly It crashes I use Vista also i used Xp but its so outdated what should i do

I've just replaced my v8.4 ATi driver with v8.3 and SL works again. (ATi drivers officially scuk.)

heh they have gotten alot better, but yea they suck , main reason i avoid ati

OK, the app I was holding back my driver version for has been upgraded and now works with v8.5. I've replaced the v8.3 with the v8.5 and SL still works.

In conclusion: ATi owners, stay away from Catalyst v8.4 if you want SL to work well.
