I am going to be purchasing a new laptop for myself soon, but am confused as to which processor is best for SL, AMD, Celeron, Pentium. Is there a difference at all?

Also, is Vista still an issue for SL?

Your input would be greatly appreciated!

Thanx!

Ooh me too. Vista Shouldn't be too much of a Problem, as it's Supported by Second Life, so if a Bug is found it's listed and fixed.

That's good, do you know anything about the processors though?

I would stay away from low end processors like Celeron. My leanings are toward Intel but I'm sure AMD is fine.............I heard they got the heat problem under control lately.

I'm not much on laptops for everyday use......just too tempermental and being in such a confined space they tend to get pretty warm. The major advantage of a laptop that I can see is that you can be more or less mobil......and that usually means wireless. Wireless and SL don't have a good reputation for being dependable......get a long Cat 5e cable to drag around the house. :)

Well I went to BestBuy yesterday and bought a new machine, not top of the line but definitly runs much better than my previous laptop.
SL works very well on it even wireless!

ugh they never had a heat problem, intel just made their chips less hot!

for the record tho, historically amd's are alot less problematic when it comes to extreame heat

back in the late 90's early 2k's we used to take athlons and pentium III's, remove their heatsinks and let them run in a warehouse in the dead of summer, intels would smoke and die, amd's would keep going, finally flake out, cool off and start going again (atleast 8 cycles of this)

same still holds true today, my buddies dual core intel's fan locked up and the cpu burned up and died (obviously a crappy heatsink), where as sunday night, my dumb ass wasnt paying attention, and my heat sink fell off (yes fell the FK OFF!) of my a64x2 and continued to run for almost 40 min before the mainboard had enough and shut the system off

my computer actually picked up 2% speed in bench marks, my buddy tho had to go buy a 200$ chip

so ... who really has a heat problem?

back to the op, do not get anything with "ron" in the cpu name, these are cheap chips, they do not usually contain all the features or memory of the big brothers, and some of the time they are not even the same generation of chips

ie i had a 500mhz celeron a few years ago, should be a stripped out PIII but was just really a juced up pII

amd vs intel = ford vs chevy, in a laptop intels seem to win cause of less heat generated, and better power management, course it does this in laptops by cutting your speed in half while your on battery (kinda cheating but whatever)

better to look at the other features and price first, more than which brand of cpu is in it (and its not a ron)

Very interesting :) But, I'll stick to Intel..............thanks, though.

Had an AMD.........heat sink and fan worked great, the chip smoked. Never had that happen to an Intel. :)

Didn't want to start a new topic for this, so figured i would tack onto this one.

I'm currently scouting out a new laptop for myself. I need it for RL work, and SL work. I've found this one that i've kind of fell partial to. I have doubts about it running SL nicely, and i've heard skepticism over it, so i wanted to know if anyone has used this with sl, and how it ran... Or any input on it.

Thanks a bunch.

And never forget laptops have a inherent problem with heat building up inside the case (the size is so much smaller). Find a way to keep it as cool as possible.......a "cool pad" is something to look into. But, never, ever try to run SL with the laptop actually sitting on your lap or on some soft surface (table cloths qualify as a soft surface). Flat hard surface like a desk or table at the very minimum.

Ty for the help, yes i already have a cool pad :)

I'm not exactly looking for it to run flawlessly or even for heavy use (As i think thats just a figment of imagination unless i start piecing off limbs of my body.. haha) But just in case i need to upload something on the go, or check in real quick.. short times at most.

I'm still contemplating on it.. i might bump it up some still.. But, we will see! :)
