Have you recieved any e-mails from Linden Lab? It may be on hold because you were suspended/banned for violating the ToS or CS. Or, you may be suspected as a minor.

My trial expired and my full credit card rebuffed the 2L charge. Even so, I was able to log in to renew my membership with a different card, simply from account prefs on the website (without logging into the game).
