For about that you can find an Nvidia GTX 260. That will run SL very well.

Before even getting to the graphics card, I have to wonder why you'd pay for 8GB of RAM, and then use a 32-bit OS. Were you perhaps unaware that, by definition, a 32-bit operating system can only recognize 4GB of memory (including device memory and system RAM, combined)? If you want to actually use all that memory you paid for, you MUST get a 64-bit OS. Otherwise, at least 4.5 GB of it is just sitting there, wasted, totally unused.

As for the video card, I'll second Veritable's recommendation for a GTX 260. Newegg has a ton of them right now in your price range.

As nVidia manufacturing partners go, I prefer EVGA and XFX, myself, because both companies have great customer service.

What's the wattage on the power supply?

It would be wise to know what your power supply can produce before buying a video card.

At 400w i would not upgrade beyond a 9800GT without changing the power supply.

And people here may not even recommend that.

Actually, for most 32-bit OS's, the limit is 4GB of virtual memory *per process*.

If the new power supply has the same motherboard connections (usually a 24-pin for the motherboard and I am guessing a 4-pin for the CPU), it will work for your computer. The extra power is available for additional connectors such as the hard drive power, fan/accessory power, and most importantly for your upgrade, to either 6 or 8 pin PCI connectors which connect directly to the graphics card.

For 32-bit Windows, there is a total physical memory of 4 GB. Period. There is a way around this that can be used on *nix systems, but was disabled in Vista with Service Pack 1. If you are using "virtual" memory, it is possible to use the extra 4.5 GB as a RAM-disc and point the swap file there, but that still is not as good as using RAM as RAM.

I would recommend grabbing a 64-bit Windows 7 next week. It has lower system overhead than Vista, and will address all of your memory. That will speed your system quite a bit.
