Is anyone else having problems connecting? I can ping the login server and access all the SL web site, but when I try to connect, I get to "Verifying Protocol Version" and the connection process will not proceed further.

I'm having this trouble as well!
I just started an account... It'd be a shame if I had to cancal that account because of a little connection issue. Be a shame indeed.. Scicne I'm testing for the entire house of 5 who wants to get accounts. |

Whenever you can't connect, try clearing your cache files and trying again. They are located, on PCs, at the following location:
C:\Documents and Settings\USERNAME\Application Data\SecondLife\cache I'd say 80% of the time this has fixed login problems I've had in the past. |

Well I see where you just posted in another forum that you are behind a firewall... That info might have been useful.
From the Knowledge Base: "The ports that need to be opened are 12020 - 13050. If that range seems to be large, you can limit it to 12020 - 12050 and 13000 - 13050. The best solution is to allow full connections to the entire Second Life server farm. Each server has its own IP address, and Second Life owns the entire 63.211.139.* IP range in order to add more servers in the future, so your best bet is opening 63.211.139.1 - 254 for future compatibility." |

Opening that many ports is going to take a VERY long time for me.. This old Linux box makes me have to add a new line and restart for each little port.
Maybey there's a way to force Second Life to use a port? |

Yeah, that's not the right IP, either. They've switched colos since then. It MAY not even be the correct port range, either.
There's more sims than IPs in that range now, and that was the old one anyway. If the Lindens ever scrap the knowledge base and replace it with something that works properly and doesn't have stuff like this gem I just picked out at random: Question: Is there a map of the world that I can see? Answer: When exploring, it's helpful to have an overview of the land you're traveling through. A regularly updated map of Second Life is available from the Help menu. Open the Help menu and select Map of the World ... As new land is added to the world and new attractions are built, this map will be updated. Date Created 12/17/2002 Date Updated 01/14/2003 Yes, that's right, kids. The Map used to be under "Help". ![]() _____________________
