v 1.2 message at startup "graphics settings have been changed based on your configuration."
uumm...so the configurator decided that I shouldn't use AGP graphics acceleration. the check mark is removed. ok. PCI, here I come! lol. also, all bump mapping is disabled. the check boxes are grayed out. I understand that Geforce FX cards get ripple water disabled. I can live with that. I understand that I have to have 512 MB of system ram in my machine to even use the full 128 MB of video ram on my graphics card. That's silly, but I can live with that (until I can afford more system ram). But, if Geforce FX cards also lose bump mapping in 1.2, I plan to have a serious problem with that. In the nicest way, of course.

You can still change your settings from those recommended. You might run slower, but it might be worth it.

Those are default settings now - just change your preferences: Preferences, Display (tab) Your card should be able to handle: Anisotropic Filtering Local Lighting Object Bump Avatar - bump mapped and cloth maybe even more Then choose quit as some of those changes require re-start. I think Lindens have set the default viewing low to avoid new people from not being able to run SL if they dont have a great graphics card. Sinatra

From: someone Originally posted by paulie Femto yeah, I can rechoose AGP. no prob. however, bump mapping (avatar and object) is DISABLED. unable to be activated. that=not a good thing. I wholeheartedly agree. I was getting that same effect due to my amount of memory, but the bumpmapping, etc. didn't seem to effect performance at all, regardless. You can either add more memory (not a great option) or manually re-enable bumpmapping. After getting the "optimum settings" message, select everything you can that you want enabled and quit SL. Then go to: Document & Settings->Username->Application Data->SecondLife->user_settings and open up settings.ini. Look for RenderObjectBump and set it to true. Note: I just looked at the very latest version and I don't seem to have that option listed. I don't know if that's due to my recent memory upgrade or a change in the Dec. 18th update, so fiddle with the settings and see if anything fixes it. I do have a new option called "RenderBumpmapMinDistanceSquared" so maybe setting that to something will work. Mine's at 2500.

I'm not sure if this made it into the release notes or not, if it didn't, I apologize.
Object bump-mapping and avatar bump-mapping are currently disabled for systems which only have 256MB of RAM, because there's a very good chance that you'll run out of memory and crash. Also, it's likely that you would be getting VERY poor performance due to virtual memory swapping whenever you were around a lot of avatars.

OK, thanks for the tip on memory. Now I know what to ask for this Christmas.
