Disconnect issues since router purchase

Hi, I recently installed a router instead of the switch I used to have, since it broke after a few years of service. The issue Im now facing is this:
In seemingly random intervals, I will lose connection. First the network speed will drop to 0, then, after a few minutes, I will hear a *ding* with the message that I have been logged out of SL. Sometimes I can log back in right away, sometimes i have to wait the extra 5 minutes because the system is logging me out.
Additionally, sometimes voice will reconnect pretty roughly every 60 seconds, which is also rather annoying.

I took a peek at the router settings page in the wiki, but I a) dont own linux, b) dont own a cisco router who allows for this fancy kind of input, thus am completely lost as to what to even do to make it work.

If anyone can give me some pointers, id much appreciate it

What is the make and model of your router?

This is usually based on whether or not the sim realizes you have been disconnected. If you try to relog and get the "the server is logging you out" message, wait about 30 seconds before you try again. That'll prevent the 5 minute penalty..

That's a really simple device. Make sure you have the web filtering disabled.

I can't get my new router to connect at all. It's a DeWalt DW616.

The OP's netgear manual is at ftp://downloads.netgear.com/files/RP614v4_RM_12Jun08.pdf.

I too tired to read the whole thing at the moment.

Yeh, I had the manual, I just couldn't find the firewall setting. It's REALLY stupid. It only has one setting. On or off.

It's on the WAN setup page. The only option is "disable SPI firewall". Do it.

well I disabled the router firewall, and no dice. I still get several disconnects a day, and its sadly very annoying right now. I used to be able to stay in for hours on end, but now Im just getting randomly thrown out, and voice keeps reconnecting every minute. this is starting to really get to me, since Im working on SL and generally spend most of my time there

The router might be expiring entries from its NAT table based on when the session started instead of when the last packet was handled. That's a really crazy way to do things, I know, but some routers do that. Others maintain their firewall connection tables that way but their NAT tables are fine... in which case your problem would have been fixed by turning off the firewall.

Don't know what to do now.

hmm this is interesting though. I dont get any regular timeouts though, the intervals seem random, from between several hours (5+) down to less than a few seconds (occured today, lost connection twice immediately after login, the sim seemed healthy. some lag, but after I returned, all inhabitants were where they used to be)

edit:
also, SL is the only program I have right now with that kind of behaviour, so im puzzled why this happens.
could it be that Im using dynamic DHCP in the router? maybe SL needs static network adresses, so if you believe that this may make a difference, ill give it a try

I've never used any Netgear products but I have used both Linksys and D-Link. Those two companies have excellent customer support and a ton of patience for us "don't know a thing about routers" types. I see no reason Netgear would be any different..........here's their customer support page:

http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/1204

Abou a year ago I had a similar (but not same) problem with my Linksys. Random disconnects where only a resetting of the router would fix it.......especially problematic on SL. And the other computer on this network did not have a problem at all. I called Linksys thinking they would tell me to go to LL or Microsoft for my solution. They did not.........they walked me through configuring my router on the spot while on the phone. Haven't had the problem since.

Call them...........they might be able to help you. Much more likely than here I would guess.

well, after several attempts and fixes (updated the netgear firmware to the newest version. that fixed the disconnects, but it still halts the connection for 5ish seconds every now and then), I decided to get a new model entirely, different brand.
Same exact issue. I dont get disconnected, but every now and then, the router simply seems to halt the connection for 5 seconds (seems to happen globally, voice and downloads stop as well), then resumes. no log entry, nothing. (yes, the router usually does log if the connection gets dropped, but not when it halts)

I contacted the support via email, but im still waiting on a reply right now

edit: new model is a level one FBR-1418 TX, also newest firmware

Are you sure your connection is being "halted"? I think you might be seeing what most people have been complaining about lately which is lag and in my opinion that lag is 100% server side and everywhere in some form on the grid. Put up your statistics bar by the view menu > statistic bar (there's a key stroke short cut but I'm not sure what it is......maybe control 1 or control shift 1?). Take a look at the sim FPS, packet loss, and time dilation when those "halts" occur. The stats bar will be about 2 to 3 seconds behind the occurrence. Your packet loss should be 0% or very near that (not more than 1%). Sim FPS should be a solid 45 FPS. And the time dilation should be 1.00 (not lower than .95 or so). If those numbers not in that range when your "halts" are happening you are looking at the lag everyone is having..........and nothing on your end is going to fix it.

This problem has been happening in some form for about a month and sometimes it's worse than other times. I haven't found a correlation I can tie to the times it's worse. Concurrency does not appear to be a factor. Time of day or day of week don't either.

Ive thought that too at first, but the time dilation in my home sim rarely drops below 0.99. Packet loss also is (strangely) at 0.0, and furthermore, the halting apparently does affect my entire connection. Downloads pause, voice chat (non-SL) falls silent. So its either a router with the same identical fault despite being a different brand/model, or somethings wrong with the way I set it up, but I have no idea what that could be.

Ive gathered some more info, which is rather strange:
I found out that outbound connections arent affected by these lockups, only inbound. so for example, when using voice, I wont hear my partner for a while, but they will continue to hear me fine

Im been having a very similar issue for 4 weeks. Getting logged out every (approx 5 minutes). I use D-link dsl 502T. I havent changed anything but it suddenly started happening and I have no clue how to stop it.
