Howdy. Hope someone can help. Everything will be working just dandy, then part of the landscape will start blinking on and off rapidly - going black, then coming back. Or, there will be huge slashing lines of brilliant color that run across the screen, and blink on and off. The lines and blinking often seem to depend upon what direction my avatar is facing. Turn in one direction, all hell breaks loose. Turn in another direction, everything is fine. At other times, the landscape may be ok, but my controls and menus will start blinking rapidly on and off.

I'd been running SL with no problems for months. Then, this issue happened a couple of times. So, I uploaded the newest driver for my graphics card, and the situation seemed to get worse. So, I went back to the old driver, and the problem went away.

But, then it occurred again a couple of times recently. I tried uploading SL version 1.22.11, and the problem returned with a vengeance. So, I tried uploading the newest graphics driver again, and the problem is still there. I tried uninstalling SL, an re-installing it. No change. SL is unusable this way.

I don't have any graphics problems with anything else on this computer.

I'm not savvy with controls and options for SL, graphics cards, and such.

Here are my stats:

Windows XP Media Center Edition version 2002, Service Pack 2
Dell Dimension DXP061
Intel Core 2CPU 6400@2.13GHz
2GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 7900 GS - with most up-to-date driver
Second Life Version 1.22.11

Thanks much.

Overheating

In case this information can help someone else...

A friend diagnosed my problem. My computer was overheating. He suggested I download nTune, which enabled me to check the temperature (among other things). Who knew?

My computer was running about 30 degrees hotter than it should have been. I rearranged the computer set-up location, and all is now well.
