Before I go boot my PC upside the case and give Adelphia a kick in the behind (hmm... not a bad idea) I'd like to know if there are any issues with running Second Life on a system with Windows XP Professional Service Pack 2 installed?
Aside from new annoyances with running applications (installers mostly) I can't say I'm that impressed with SP2, (downloads seem to die at 90% complete with ZoneAlarm Pro up...) and would love to get all the previous security patches instead of SP2...

1. You know you don't need ZoneAlarm with SP2, right?
2. No, no problems at all.

As long as you're not running Novell....

Why because we are gluttonous lazy bastards who say it won't happen to me so who cares. --Ishtar Pasteur

I would recomend making sure that the windows firewall is completely disabled if you are using a 3rd party firewall. Also make sure you have the latest version / updates to your firewall which may fix some potential compatability issues with SP2.

I would recommend using a firewall other that Microsoft's, if at all possible. The Windows Firewall will not catch programs trying to communicate out to the Internet. I consider that to be a security risk.

its not bad if you have a off the shelf copy or oem copy of xp, but be warned sp2 does not play with well with vendor copys, eg, compaq and dell versions of xp, that littel gem of info would have saved me loads of time if i had spoted it sooner. i did run the msdn version of XP Pro because i do a lot of windows devlopment, in about the same amount of time it took to install sp2 it manged to totaly destroy my xp partition. thank god i only use windows for games and uni work. if any one sports my thread about page file erros i found the problem off topic: as for the other part of that thread, any one know how to get a non-cvs version of winex 4.0 working with SL ? mine keeps crashing

I have had no problems with Windows XP SP2, because I was smart enough to go out to my computer maker's website ( http://www.compaq.com) and updated everything they told me to BEFORE installing SP2. Simple recommendation really. ALWAYS check with your computer maker to find out what is needed first.

From: someone Originally posted by Millie Thompson I trust ZoneAlarm more than I trust Microsoft's firewall. https://www.grc.com/x/ne.dll?bh0bkyd2Go to above site and check, you will see that the microsoft firewall is just as good as zonealarm...BUT I don't understand using my CPU cycles for a firewall, so I bought a SMC barricade router, it passes all GRC and Sybase tests, so will not turn on Microsofts or Zonealarm ever.

the point of zonealarm/ms firewall is that it will stop programs you haven't authorized from making outbound connections. external firewalls cannot do this.
