What the hell did they change in 1.5.3!?!?!?!? Why the hell won't they answer emails from their PAYING CUSTOMERS??!!!

I'm so pissed off right now.

I uninstalled and reinstalled and now SL won't even get past the initial "detecting hardware" popup.

NOT HAVING FUN, LINDENS!!!

NOT HAVING FUN!!!

Aaron--I'm only responding because I've seen a lot of these posts from you lately... I haven't been having these kind of problems you've been suggesting, and I don't think too too many others have, either. :( I think you should send your bug reports and sit on your problem or contact the Lindens via phone to figure out why your system isn't responding well with the new versions. I don't, however, think a lot of people are dealing with lots of problems like these right now.

My SL experience was virtually bug-free, even when a lot of people were having a lot of bugs, up until 1.5.3.

I am getting a new video card on Saturday or Sunday -- $299 nVidia will bring me up to date!! -- and I am just hoping and praying that it does the trick.

Aaron, yes our crash report stats say you have a Radeon 8500 and you're crashing deep in the ATI drivers. We expect a new nVidia card will solve your problem.

That's what I suspected, though I didn't crash anywhere NEAR as much prior to 1.5.3.

Thanks for looking into it though, I'm glad to see someone's helping us people who feel helpless.

*snerk*

I think I'm saving a link to this post. :D

That said, LL is getting around to answering their emails. I got three answers to ancient bugs today.

That is so wrong!
You guys getting you fingers out of you ass and spending some decent time fixing the ATI issues will fix it my friend!

That comment makes me feel ill.

Second life is the most ATI-unfriendly game in existence. Search the forums. I think they are getting regular payments from nVidia or something.

Could you two explain to us exactly why it's LL's fault that ATI drivers/cards don't actually fully support the open standards they claim to support?

Or why it's LL's fault that the ATI driver is crashing?

It's because there's a secret plot to insert anti-ATI code into LL's project, dontchaknow. Because even when ATI cards didn't work for me for half a dozen other games, it's all LL's fault.

Ati is widely regarded as having crappy drivers. Actually, if you ignore the fanboys who constantly cite a plethora of dubious benchmarks, Ati is widely regarded as a crappy brand, period.

Personally you sound like a nvidia fanboy. But i won;t quote benchmarks ar you, i just say i updated my ati drivers and woo frame rates back to normal and texture corruption stopped.

Which just goes to show that ATI has been at fault all this time, at least as far as the problems you were seeing.

The fact of the matter is that ATI drivers have been buggier, and are still buggier, than nVidia's. That said, their drivers are better now than they have ever been (especially for 9200 and better, rumor has it they are reducing their bug fixing efforts for lesser hardware). ATI also makes very fast hardware.

Benchmarks can be misleading. Both nVidia and ATI have been known to tune their drivers and take shortcuts to get artificially high benchmarks for the most popular games of the day. Both companies release enough of a variety of hardware that their performance ranges are practically identical. Our statistics indicate that *for Second Life* the latest ATI cards do in fact have better average FPS than the latest nVidia cards.

Second Life has exposed some subtle bugs in ATI drivers because our graphics engine stresses some aspects of the OpenGL standard differently than most other graphics engines. Our texture handling is one example that stands out (most games are tuned to load the level textures and hold them until the next level -- we need to be able to load all new textures (and possibly unload others) when the avatar in front of you starts to modify their appearance).

ATI cards are great! We will continue to struggle to support them. In the meantime, if you are looking to buy a new video card and love stability buy nVidia.

Thanks for update Andrew. Your original post seemed a bit "we don't care"
