Hi all I was running Second life on Windows XP with no problem. I have a new PC which is running the final release candidate of Windows 7. Continuously I keep getting the PC freezing up completely and the only way I can recover from this is to push the reset button on the PC. This is only happening with Second Life, both with the standard SL Viewer and also Greenlife Emerald. When the PC comes back on the following error code is displayed. Problem signature: Problem Event Name: BlueScreen OS Version: 6.1.7100.2.0.0.256.1 Locale ID: 2057 Additional information about the problem: BCCode: 124 BCP1: 00000000 BCP2: 875DA3CC BCP3: 00000000 BCP4: 00000000 OS Version: 6_1_7100 Service Pack: 0_0 Product: 256_1 Files that help describe the problem: C:\Windows\Minidump\093009-15693-01.dmp C:\Users\Nick\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-27924-0.sysdata.xml Read our privacy statement online: http://go.microsoft.com/fwlink/?linkid=104288&clcid=0x0409If the online privacy statement is not available, please read our privacy statement offline: C:\Windows\system32\en-US\erofflps.txt I have attempted to run the program in XP compatibility mode, but still the problem occurs. Does anyone have any idea what is causing this to happen, and how I can fix it? Thank you N1ck

Hi, Nick. I don't know squat about Windows 7, but I can say that a very common cause of SL BSOD is overheating. If it is a laptop, get a cooling pad for it before you try SL again.
If it's not a laptop, could you post your machine specs? You can get them from SL's login screen - just choose Help/About from the top menu bar, and cut/paste the tech info relating to your machine here.

Can you post hardware details? I have no problems running Emerald in Win7 64 bit on my laptop, but it has a pretty hefty CPU/GPU.
I would, as a precaution, run Windows update and go to the chipset vendor's web page for the latest driver (that is, get it from Nvidia or AMD, not from the card or computer manufacturer's web page). I might also suggest, if you are technically inclined, to make sure your memory is properly seated. Opening SL will suddenly fill your memory, and if one slot is either miseated or bad, it will cause crashes.
Again, more hardware details will get you more specific recommendations. These are just general starting points.

Also, read (and perhaps even post) the information from those two files.
C:\Windows\Minidump\093009-15693-01.dmp C:\Users\Nick\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-27924-0.sysdata.xml
They'll also give more information about what's going on.

Hardware Specs
09-30-2009 15:38
Ok the Hardware Specs are as Follows.
Operating System = Windows 7 (32 bit) Motherboard = AsRock N7AD-SLI Bios Manufacturer = American Megatrends Inc. Bios Version = P1.30 Bios Release = 06/19/2009 CPU = Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 @ 2.33 GHz Total Physical Memory = 3583 MB RAM Available Physical Memory = 2678 MB RAM Slot 1 = SDRAM 2048 MB Slot 2 = Not Populated Slot 3 = SDRAM 2048 MB Slot 4 = Not Populated Virtual Memory = C:/pagefile.sys (3583 MB)
Hard Drive free Space = 673 GB
Graphics Card = NVidea GeForce 9800 GT (512mb) Video Bios = Version 62.92.84.0.6 Driver Provider = NVidea Driver Version = 8.16.11.9062 Driver Date = 08/17/2009
Broadband Connction = 20mb (Never runs at less then 12mb)
Unless Im mistaken that kind of spec PC should absolutely walk all over Second life and run it with no problems at all. At least I now know that its not Windows 7 causing the problem (which I suspected at first) as you just said that your running Windows 7.
Im not sure how much of the above information will be usefull to you Techy People, coz I know pretty much nothing, so I hope the above is what you was looking for. If you need anything else then let me know and I will try and find out for you.
As for posting the information in this:
C:\Windows\Minidump\093009-15693-01.dmp
I cant, as I am unable to view the file, unless you know of a program that would open it for me?
C:\Users\Nick\AppData\Local\Temp\WER-27924-0.sysdata.xml
That file does not appear on the system any longer, so I have no idea what it said.
Any ideas please guys?
This is really annoying, I bought a new computer to improve my SL experience and its just making it worse!
Many thanks N1ck

GreenLife Emerald Viewer 1.23.4 (673) Aug 25 2009 04:35:47 (GreenLife Emerald Viewer) Release Notes Built with MSVC version 1400 CPU: Intel Pentium III/Pentium III Xeon (0.25 micron process) with external L2 cache (2297 MHz) Memory: 3584 MB OS Version: Microsoft Windows XP Service Pack 3 (Build 2600) Graphics Card Vendor: NVIDIA Corporation Graphics Card: GeForce 9800 GT/PCI/SSE2 Windows Graphics Driver Version: 8.16.0011.9062 OpenGL Version: 3.1.0 Why is it reprting the processor as a Pentium III Xeon? Im presuming its reporting the OS Version as XP, as I set it to that in the windows 7 compatibility changer that you can get too by right clicking the icon and selecting properties, I changed it to that as I thought the problem might be Windows 7, but its made no difference to the crashing.

Reporting the CPU as a Pentium isn't unusual, and should not be an issue. There is a newer driver available from Nvidia ( http://www.nvidia.com/object/win7_winvista_32bit_190.62_whql.html ), I would try installing that. If you are OK with opening the computer, I would also suggest removing one of the memory cards and trying again. Then switch which one is installed and try one more time. Is there a reason that you are running the 32-bit version of Windows 7? If you install 64-bit, you will get to use all of your memory (notice how you have 2x2048 installed but only have 3584 MB installed. That's the limit of what a 32-bit Windows can address. Installing a 64-bit OS will fix that, plus get better performance out of your processor.

No reason for using 32 bit really, its just what the person who built the computer for me put in.
I will ask him about 64 bit operating system and see what he says.
Will also try the graphics card drivers update.
So, you definitely think that the BSOD is caused by some kind of RAM memory problem?
I can get him to check that out for me also.

Here's how to read that dump file: http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315263After you've read the file, come on back, and post the info here, so we can see what's going on. Here are some fairly common causes of the behavior you described, no particular order: 1. As Nika said, your machine might be overheating. 2. It could be a timing issue. If your memory and system clocks are out of sync, that can lead to random freezes, especially when running resource-intensive programs like SL. This is particularly common with overclocked systems. 3. You might have a faulty memory module. Download MemTest86 from memtest.org, and let it do its thing. If you've got any bad memory, MemTest will tell you what's up. 4. It might just be a bad driver. This is unlikely, but it could be. Uninstall the video driver you've got, and install the latest one from nVidia. For best results with Vista and XP, I always recommend using DriverCleaner. I'm not 100% sure about 7, but I assume it's the same as Vista, in this regard. 5. Check that all your cards are properly seated, all cables tightly connected, etc. It's a good idea to unplug/unseat each item, one by one, and plug it back in/reaseat it. Do this for everything inside the machine, including PCI cards, memory modules, hard drives, and all wiring. If something is loose or improperly seated, that can certainly trigger freezes. As for the 64-bit OS question, it's not likely that the 32-bit version you have is the direct cause of your problem. However, 32-bit OS's are becoming more and more antiquated every day, and I'd strongly recommend you ditch yours, in favor of a 64-bit verison. It's pretty silly to pay for memory, and then not be able to use it all.

If you're getting BSOD on *just* SL, but nothing else, that's a little odd. Your rig should run SL just fine. And, even if your video driver is a bit dated, it shouldn't cause you to crash.
Temperature or memory are your best bets. Nvidia gives away a nifty little system monitor app that gives you both GPU and CPU temperatures, and I think case as well. I don't know what it's called for the system you have (you're a little beyond me), it may even be integrated into the driver UI. In any case, you'll be able to tell if temp is the issue.
RAM ... folks, could it be his video ram? If your sys integrator happens to have another of these cards lying about, see if you can borrow it and substitute.
And, last but not least, I note you have an SLI motherboard but only one video card. I run that way too, and everything just worked when I plugged it in, but I can't help but wonder if some jumper is set for SLI and confusing your box when graphically demanding apps run.

I can get him to check that out for me also. I suggest the RAM because it is easy to do, and I like to eliminate the easy fixes before getting into the more complex issues. Memory and heat are the most common causes of crashes, and SL uses lots of memory, as well as stressing system components. I would download ntools (that has the system monitor app from Nvidia) and run the temperature sensors. If you want to stress-test your GPU, download and run Furmark alongside the temperature monitor (ntools or HWmonitor) and let it run for 30 minutes. It tests Open GL rendering, which is the same graphics system SL uses, so it should tell you if the GPU is the problem. Ntools http://www.nvidia.com/object/nvidia_system_tools_6.02.htmlHW Monitor http://www.cpuid.com/hwmonitor.phpFurmark http://www.ozone3d.net/benchmarks/fur/Orthos (stress test for CPU and memory)' http://files.extremeoverclocking.com/file.php?f=200

I have ran "PC Mark" on it, and it runs without a hitch, part of this is testing 3D graphics performance.......it all went through ok.
I will try the Furmark and NVidea System Tools. But I suspect they are going to say their is no problem as it previously ran PC mark.
Im still led back to thinking its memory.....
Wanted to run Memtest86 on it, but could somebody post an idiots guide on how to do that, I know have to create a Boot disk and let the PC boot from that, but I have never had to do this so dont know how too.

Crash Dump Report
10-01-2009 11:01
Hi all
As requested I have now managed to view.
Its a huge pile of text that I dont understand, but maybe you guys will understand it.
I tried to run fumark, but it crashed about 20 seconds into the test with exactly the same error message as before. So I wasnt able to monitor heat settings or gain any information from the NVidea Monitor Tool.
It produces the following dump file:

GPU temps aren't bad, but the crashing in SL and Furmark seems to point to a problem with the video card. I would suggest reseating the card and checking the power connection (forgot to ask: What is your power supply? Underpowered video cards can cause crashes under stress). If that does not help, see if your system builder can swap out the card. If not, RMA to the manufacturer.

Wait a second...I just noticed you are still running a Release Candidate version of Win7. The RTM version is available at [ http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/evalcenter/cc442495.aspx?ITPID=wtcfeed ] and is stable...the RC is beta and may still have unresolved bugs: the Release to Manufacturers version is the first release version and is more stable (it is also the version that drivers are tested on).
You can download the 64-bit version and do a clean install. It will hold you over for 90 days so you can get a commercial version.

Ok
So you guys think its now most likely an unstable operating system that's causing the probelms?
But it COULD still be that the OS is fine, and its a faulty graphics card, RAM or either one of those is not connected properly.
Im really starting to wish I had just bought a manufactured PC instead of getting a homebuilt one, in theory the home built one should have been fine, but with all these problems Im so regreting it.

From: N1CK Zuta So you guys think its now most likely an unstable operating system that's causing the probelms? I seriously doubt that is the case. I do think you'd be better off with the 64-bit version of Windows. Ask your system builder about it. You can check the memory with Microsoft's Windows Memory Diagnostic: http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

There have been other people who have had problems with stability on the RC. It can't hurt, and it might help. I would check memory first, since it is a fast and easy test. Next update the Nvidia drivers, followed by reseating the video card and checking power connections. If none of these work, talk to your system builder. Swapping out your video card for a known good card will tell you if that is the problem. After that, I would try a clean install of the Win7 RTM. It's a cheap fix, but it does take more time. I would not say that the RC is the most likely problem, but I would not completely dismiss it either. It is beta software, while the RTM is released code. Running Windows Update will not fix the bugs in the RC to make it as stable as the RTM version, and the Nvidia drives are tested against the RTM code.

Hi all Thank you for all your replies. Heres an update of what I now know. The memory has been tested with both the supplied windows 7 memory tester and Memtest 86, Memtest86 was ran on the machine twice, both times with no faults indicated. The Graphics card has now been reseated and tested with a number of "stress test" programs, and all indicate that it is performing as it should. My System builder has also ran some, what he describes as "heavy-weight" programs & games, the computer ran all of these very well and did not crash once. As for Second Life, both SL Viewer 1.23.4 (12390 & Greenlife Emerald 1.23.4 (673) has still been crashing on the system very regularly, in fact a lot of the time even the sign in screen was freezing before the viewer actually starts. My system builder has now tried the Release Candidate of the main Second Life Viewer, and bizzarly this appears to work with no problems on Windows 7 RC that I have. So not quite sure if this has fixed it, more testing is needed, but its looking good so far. On the subject of why he loaded the 32 bit version of Windows 7 onto the machine, he said it was becasue he was concerned that some of my existing programs would not work with a 64 bit operating system, so thought it best to stick with 32 bit. So has this problem been solved........time will tell.
