SL hard-locks my OS every 15min...

Okay, here's the deal. Every now and then, I get this problem...SL will lock, and lock up my entire system.

When it goes through a rough spot like this, the lockups are every 10-15 minutes.

Here's a bit of background....

I have tried all releases. 1.19 and 1.20 both have this issue, as well as other older clients in the past.

I have completely changed computers, save for a Netgear 311T wireless card. I have even tried disabling the wireless card and going hardwired.

I have completely changed my Operating system. When this first started to happen, I was running Windows XP SP2 32-bit, now I am running Windows Vista 64-bit.

My roommate does not have these lockups. They run the OSX client.

I have changed physical locations - we're talking moved to a new city, but same ISP.

I have had three different routers give me this issue.

I have tried 3rd party clients. Rex, CoolSL or whatever...same issue.

I have changed brands of video cards when I changed computers.

I have used MSCONFIG to disable every non-MS service.

I have had this happen on both established and fresh installs of any OS.

I have cranked the fans in my computer.

I have run with the case completely open and fan pointing at it.

I have tried about everything I can think of. In Vista, it reports that an issue with my video hardware caused the error. Yet, this error occurred before on different hardware. Also, when it happens, I sometimes have mouse control and can alt-tab. Sometimes it is a hard lockup, but I can hear my MP3 player still. (And yes, I've tried running NOTHING but SL...)

I honestly am completely out of ideas. I know others get lockups, but even my friends are baffled by this. Anyone have any advice?

I'm starting to think cosmic rays, here.....

Blah.

You didn't mention if, when you changed computers, if you installed the same RAM memory cards. I'm trying to think of anything serious enough to bring your computer completely down. Is there something that is common to both the old and the new computer? Maybe same hard drive. Memory cards. Audio cards. And, as far fetched as it may sound, are you using the same printer or scanner? Anything that was connected or installed to the old computer that is also on the new.

Just tossing out ideas.......maybe it will give a direction to look into.

Which video cards have had this problem? Make and model if you will.

Also, which drivers? Same revision?

You might try taking it to a friend's place with a different ISP.

When you changed computers, did you just by a whole new machine and swap only the netgear card, or did you do something like replace the motherboard and install the operating system yourself?

System specs would probably be useful.

What happens if you log in using your friend's OSX machines?

You say "every now and then", how often does that mean?

How long do the periods of locking up every 10 or 15 minutes last?

In response:

Peggy: All hardware changed out. Save for Netgear WN311T wireless card. WHich I've disabled and tried via hardlink. (No change.)

Robot: ATI Radeon 9800 Pro AGP 128 in old system, NVidia 8800GTS PCI-E 320MB in new system. All driver levels have the same issue.

Saiki: See below.

Suzanne:
Built whole new computer from scratch, only swap was the netgear card. Brand new OS load and vew version of OS. (XP to Vista.)

The OSX machine doesn't have this issue.

The frequency of the issue is from 5 mins after logging in up to 15 minutes or so.

The lockups last until I restart the computer. It's a hard lock, and will generally freeze my computer, then blank the screen after some time.

Also, I have found that the video card is not detected correctly. Thus, texture memory is set to 2GB. O_o I set that to 256MB (Being conservative here), and things are better, but I will still get lockups that are preceeded by a major slowdown that lasts about five seconds, then it locks.

DXDiag passes.

DXDiag output:

Have you checked the leads between the monitor and the GC? Same with the Router leads.

I didn't see any reference to drivers for the MB components.

I did see a reference to AGP port being enabled, have you checked the BIOS settings to make sure that PCI is used first?

Did the MB come with an onboard GC? (see above) to make sure there is no conflict.

As you are using Vista, make sure when you download the GC drivers, your save them, once done, right hand click the file and choose 'Run as Administrator', this will make sure the OS allows the setup, to overwrite some of the system DLL's etc.

Check you are running the correct refresh rates for your monitor.

Ive seen this issue caused by some 3rd party software. Did you try, after doing the new install of the OS, running SL before installing anything else... of course you'd need to install drivers, but just the drivers, not the software install packages that came with the devices... I had some sound software that installed and ran for mixing and stuff that came with my sound card that caused crashes in a few things including SL a long time ago... just running the dirvers without the software fixed all my problems.

Missy: Yeah, I ran it once with just a fresh Vista load, the gfx drivers, the default vista sound drivers and a profile for the monitor. No soap.

AWM: I've taken the PC out and blown it out with air, reseated all the cars, etc. Also, have used both wireless and wired between my PC and the internet. (Two different physical locations as well...)

I also turn UAC off, so I run as administrator by default.

The board has no AGP slots on it, as it uses PCI-E for gfx. I'll check and make sure there is no option in the BIOS.

Turning off UAC isnt the end of the issue and doesn't mean you are running in Administrator by default. DEP lurks in the background, this cannot be turned off, otherwise I would and get my Quick Time player back and get Java appletes to run, despite going under the hood and asigning permissions for every single element of both.

15 minutes could suggest power supply failure, or a component on the MB. It's about the right time for the PC to reach temprature. Check your GC fan is working.

As said before, make sure you load the latest drivers for the MB. Vistas alternatives aren't that great.

as in you dxdiag:

"Card name: NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GTS
Manufacturer: NVIDIA
Chip type: GeForce 8800 GTS
DAC type: Integrated RAMDAC
Device Key: Enum\PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0193&SUBSYS_042010DE&REV_A2
Display Memory: 2334 MB
Dedicated Memory: 288 MB
Shared Memory: 2046 MB"

it has 2gb accessible to windows, 288mb of which is dedicated. setting 288 is optimal to sl. the fact Sl took 2gb says it reads shared, not dedicated. something IMO that needs to be fixed. your system will hard lock due to the leaks in SL, and graphics is what causes it.

I've gone through a driver refresh, but I can also try out the GC drivers as Admin.

Note, I've had this issue on another PC, wholly different, that was running WinXP instead of Vista, tho. (And that had a third party Zalman cooler installed on the GPU.)

That I think you will find is a GC Bios report, which can be overriden.

In the SL client, go to Edit, Preferences, Graphics and click the Hardware button, drag the slider for VBO Texture Memory to 256. Uncheck Anisotropic Filtering, if checked.

I would also suggest that you use the nVidia control programme to set the options to Let Application Decide wherever applicable.
