I have a very annoying problem. Everytime I log on to SL my fans go nuts, loud as h*ll. Can I change anything in the preferences to fix this? I'm using a ATI Radeon X800 XT.

My PC does that if I let it get all dusty inside.. Have you tried giving it a good cleaning?
Many machines will have temperature sensors and speed up the fans if the system starts getting hot - make sure all the air pathways are unobstructed, too. _____________________

Hello, thank you for your reply!
I've tried that and it doesn't fix the issue ![]() I only have this problem when running SL. |

I'd still bet that it's getting hot and speeding up the fans in an effort to keep it from melting..
Dunno ATI - is there some app you can run to see the card temperature? _____________________

I swear I totally read this wrong. I seriously thought you meant fans, as in people who LOVE you. I was gonna tell you to be a bit more humble and love them back!

if your fans are clean about the only thing you could do is switch to a 3rd party heat sink with a larger slower moving fan
NOW, almost always the loudest fan in the system is on the cpu, generally video card fans are pretty quiet, whereas cpu fans are usually too small, have to big of a angle on the blades and move way too fast. all 3 of those just chops up the air badly and creates a ton of racket software wise best you can do is to keep your machine at a low level by turning down all your preferences (and that still might not work) as mentioned above when computers have to do work (like SL) they heat up, and to keep it under control the fans are then unrestricted (personal note) i have not been a big "fan" of the variable speed thing |
