i am trying to decide which cpu to get so which ones will at least work for second life and how good would each work

Are you looking for a CPU or a video card? You listed 3 video cards and one CPU.

All the video cards will probably work......with varying degrees of difficulty. NVidia has a slightly better advantage over the ATI. But, it's your call.

The AMD CPU will not have a problem at all.

it was both beacuse i was getting a new CPU but since they both work its decided i am going compaq

Don't ask me my opinion on Compaq. Be prepared for many problems from day one till the day the thing dies (which won't be long).

watch the Compaq! I have one that is a desk top and about 10 years old that still runs, but the lap tops! I have had 4 that died withing 6 months my crap Toshiba (and yes they are as well bad) 2 years and finally the power cord went bad (they have a bad supply cord or transformer or something according to the Toshiba help forums!


I would go with an HP if your gona go cheapo big box, Compaq is now owned by HP and if I am correct (and I may not be) Compaq is there crap brand ...

on that note try for the Nvidia 8200M if you can.. and make sure that thing runs max Memory as well buy the best non USB cooling pad you can!

EDIT being that it is a $399 special you are going to have nothing but issues after a couple months.. don't add anything to the HD that's important! for the price it can't be beat, but its going to Overheat from SL and no matter what people try to tell you SL uses CPU! (.) want proof? run the old RC1.20.145 to the new RC0 and see what CPU usage is... the new RC is eating 87% of two cores, where the old RC used 37% and the actual public client uses about 25% of CPU... why I say get a good non USB (you don't want to take power from the CPU or GPU) cooling pad/fan thing..

Anyone purchasing a laptop for $400 and expects anything more than an email/web browsing machine is just throwing $400 away. Might as well use that money for kindling.....you'll, at least, get a fire going that can be used for something productive.

500$ + vista = pretty, and SLOW word processor ... i would even bet it would choke on web applets

format and use linux and you might be able to play a game on it ... depends on whats actually in it

Search for that model at newegg, pricegrabber, etc.

Newegg Power Search lets' you filter for Dedicated Card versus Integrated Card, as well as different makes and models of GPUs.

If you can't afford a good notch laptop, do you really need one? As a desktop will nearly have twice the power for the same price and be upgradable easily.
And just because a low spec machine may run SL today, doesn't mean it will in 6 months time when shadows or avatar mesh is upgraded. And extra few hundred borrowed or even brought on some sort of repayment plan may solve you a lot of trouble later.
