Rather than trying to explain it, how about I just use a picture?

Sure, it's a great arsty effect, but I can't live with this.

Nope, looks the same at anytime of day.. and I've never seen SL do that at night before, which considering I've been wandering around SL for more than two years (just on different avs) I think I can safely say this has never happened to me before

Is that effect with very few colors what you are seeing in the client?

I haven't seen that kind of posterized thing in years, but it used to crop up when video cards were tighter on memory and the screen resolution was too high to support a full palette. So, even if it's specific to that program, video settings and capacity would be the areas where I would start poking.

AHA! It's only when I turn Basic Shaders on! Which I suppose I don't need seeing as I'm not even sure what they do.

Oh wait... that means none of the other fancy graphics things will work.... that sucks, I like pumping up my graphics, but my fiance recently messed with my comp and rebuilt it and now I know nothing about it

Actually there's not even any point in using windlight without the shaders....

I had used windlight when it was originally released without problems so maybe it's something in my new setup

No, it means you have an ATI Card. Sadly the new windlight works horribly with ATI cards. See this Jira:

http://jira.secondlife.com/browse/VWR-3111

LL's official stance is that it's all ATI's fault for not supporting shaders right. Translation: go buy an NVIDIA as ATI will never be supported.

Some seem to have good results with disabling the Catalyst A.I., however this did nothing for me.

Oh, btw, ATI released a new videocard driver today (Version 8.1) maybe that fixes the low color bug in opnGL applications like SL is ^_^

You guys can find the drivers here for example:

Well my driver is considerably more up to date than the one mentioned, but if I set the performance slider to Performance in CCC then I get a posterized look with the latest release candidate.

What does the Catalyst AI do exactly?

I just got the release today and I found I have to run my graphics setting on low to not get the posterized banding.

For me I don't care if the problem is ATI or SL, if SL knows a way to fix it I hope they do. I have always been able to run my graphics setting on the highest setting up till today.

gosh, i hate to vent, but i had to remove Vista off my computer and put on XL to even have SecondLife run on my laptop with an ATI card. I can't change my video card. I keep getting closer and closer to start looking into something else to spend my time on instead of SL.
