Can I set Chat time to "MY" time and not SL time?

Being in the UK it's often confusing when chat says something like 10:08 next to some private chat with someone, rather than MY time. (which was 6:08pm)

Is there anyway you can correct this, so your personal chats have the right time against them?

Thanks.

Guess I'll take that as a no then.

It's not SUPER important, it's just that if you ever take a copy of a conversation, or perhaps a copy of the stats gave off by an in-world device that reports info back to the local chat window.

The times at the start of every line are the SL clock time and not your local time (UK for me)

Would just be nice if the time for my records what that actual REAL time "for me"

I agree, i live in the UK too. But .... If it were our time, and events are organised, most people use SL time so it would probably be even more confusing :S.... But i don't think you can....Sorry

Thanks for the reply.

I know what you mean re events.

The only 2 times I'd like UK time is when I'm charting SIM Stats, so Iknow what REAL times thing smight be quicker than others.

and also chat logs, when I refer back months ago I might think I was chatting in the evening when in fact it was the early morning.

I like that time is in "SLT". This way everyone has the same frame of reference to draw upon when scheduling events and gatherings.

Without SLT we would have constant confusion and misunderstandings about what time an event is taking place.

If it is not SLT, then it should be GMT, but no matter what it should be a standard this way everyone is working on the same page and when an event or gathering is being planned and somone says "Let's host the event at 5p" a dozen people are not asking "what time is that for me?" since SLT, says it all since it is a reference point that everyone is working from so when someone says 5pm SLT everyone knows when that is, regardless of timezone.

I guess for logs and such it can cause a bit of confusion when you find yourself going through your logs and your timezone is +10 GMT.

It does not show my local time with is the twilight zone.

What is confusing is that forums are GMT, SL is pacific time, and we really should all use a 24 hour clock to eliminate any confusion regardless of the zone. Twilight zone time is currently 72:04.

24 hour clock?

I don't have a problem with SLT although I think it would be helpful if they set the time with a 24 hour clock. Given the population is spread over the planet and folk are often in different days of the week, getting rid of the AM/PM thing would make appointments less confusing at a glance.

What is confusing is that forums are GMT

The forums (like all forums) can be any time zone you want. Simply edit your preferences.

At the top right of this page, click Quick Links -> Edit Options. On the Edit Options page, scroll down to Date & Time Options, towards the bottom. You'll see pulldown menus for setting your time zone, DST detection, and your preferred start of the week day. Poke around in there, and you'll also find lots of other useful options.

Note, the forum software is an off the shelf product, not created by LL. It has nothing to do with SL itself. There need not be any confusion between how the forums function and how SL functions. They're two different things.

From the context, I think the OP is inquiring about the client and in-world time. We don't have a chat facility on the forums.

Yes, Ephraim, the OP was asking about in-world chat. Paracelsus, however, commented on the fact that the forum time has been appearing different for him than SL time, which he apparently saw as an inconsistency in the system as a whole. That wasn't a direct response to the OP, just a related note, since the subject at hand was time settings.

My reply to that was simply to make two points. First, the forum time CAN be the same as SLT, or any other time one wants it to be. Second, the forums aren't really a part of SL itself, so it shouldn't be a big deal either way.

None of that was meant as a reply to the OP. Was that not clear?

I was addressing Paracelsus as much as yourself, Chosen. I'm sorry if that wasn't clear.

I still think they should make the in-world SL clock go by SL solar time, and make up a 42-day "week" to match.

Nicely confusing, that would be. Maybe it would be a good excuse for us to start ignoring time altogether?

Seriously, I think a time standard is essential and SLT is as good as any but I find that making appointments in-world is generally complicated because both parties need to:

a] Establish that they are discussing SL time (it amazes me how many folk take their own local time as granted).

b] Be clear whether they mean am or pm (ditto, my morning isn't necessarily yours).

No matter how carefully I try to get those details right, too often there seems to be some confusion - like spelling an url or an email address over the 'phone - the potential for misunderstanding is enormous.

A 24 hour clock would make things a little bit simpler.
