DNS Error

I just updated to the newest version of SL ( 1.21.6), and all the sudden my login screen doesnt show a picture like it did before and when I try to log in, it gives me this error:

Unable to Connect to Second Life.
DNS could not resolve the host name.

Then it tells me to check to make sure I can access the SL website, which I can perfectly. Everything works fine, except logging into SL itself. I searched some forums and tried the DNS flush that I saw but it didnt work.

I'm not very good with computers or any of the techincal jargon that comes along with them, so if someone could tell me how to fix this in the most simple way possible, that would be awesome. Please help! I logged off to update the version and left my partner just sitting there, probbaly wondering where I am. =(

Hi there,

this is a re-opened issue in JIRA ,see : https://jira.secondlife.com/browse/SVC-364

Appears to me like LL is aware of that problem but not much doing to fix it :
From: Torley Linden
This isn't a single actionable "bug" per se – it's definitely frustrating to not be able to connect to Second Life, but sometimes, you get this error for other reasons. Recently, we did have network difficulties that may've resulted in this error for some of you... but long story short, it's an error message with multiple possible causes, some of them which aren't dependent on our service but other routing in-between or closer to your end.

At the JIRA entry they recommend to try OpenDNS. Maybe you should have a look at the JIRA (URL above).

/me folds his hands ,cruzifies himself and says : Thank God I don't have this problem. And may God never give me this.

At the login screen, hit control-shift-G. This will make the grid selector control appear next to the Quit button. Make sure the Agni grid is selected.

Agni is selected and Open DNS isn't working for me. I fear I'm never going to be able to get back into SL ever again, which I couldnt bare. I'd be leaving behind friends, a partner and countless other things. SL is a huge part of my life and it makes me sick to think I'm never going to get back in......

Have you tried powering off your Internet modem and router, wait a few minutes and powering back on? It might help.

ok, so, so far, i've done the following:

Reinstalled SL
Pinged a few sites (which came back with reply's and seemed to be working fine)
Unplugged the Modem and Router and plugged back in

None of that has worked so far. How long should I unplug the modem and router for? Does it make a difference? If so, why? Also, should I be unplugging the modem and router when my computer is on or off. Another thing. Should I reset the modem THEN reinstall SL or would that even matter. The future seems dim.... =(

Is OpenDNS working excluding SL or not working at all?

There's a suggestion in the Jira to add an entry to your hosts file like:

64.154.223.178 login.agni.lindenlab.com

Can you take your computer somewhere else and see if the problem occurs there?

Either take this up with your ISP, or override your system or home network's router's DNS settings to use a reliable set of DNS servers rather than the unreliable ones provided by your ISP.

What do you mean by "add an entry to your hosts file." ?

I'm pretty computer illiterate so it doesnt make any sense to me... =(

I got it fixed! Turns out it was a firewall issue after all. Expried software which was automatically denying SL access. WEWT!! =D

Good luck for you!

That jira issue's comments are pretty depressing sounding.

That's a pretty suboptimal fix; if the IP of that hostname ever changes, you'll be back to square one on this problem.
