As a few of you know, I had my G3 Ti200 die on me....

I was forced to downgrade to a G2mx (yuk).

But when I tried to run SL I got a message telling me my vid card wasn't compatable...

I ran circles around driver reinstalls, tweaking the vid settings, etc..............

I finnally gave up and thought I couldn't do SL on my system now..

But thanks to some brain storming with Shebang and Ama, I decided to just uninstall the SL client and reinstall....

And tada it works.... so just a fyi for those in this instance that may have to change or downgrade their vid cards.

The error message I was getting said that my vid card was a GDI Generic and SL requires a 32mb card. So if you get this error reinstall the client.

Hi Charlie, I had the same error response after downloading driver version 41.09 for my nvidea card. First I changed back to the old driver when playing SL and finally reinstalled the new driver (which worked fine with any other program), and then reinstalled SL. That took care of the error message and I got into the game without probs.
See yah

I'm getting the GDI Generic message and reinstalling *doesn't* fix the problem for me.

My card is a Geforce4 440 Go and should be 'better than required' for 2ndLife.

It's incorrectly detecting the card as GDI Generic, like I said.

I'm running the latest Nvidia drivers (44.03 from May 17th).

Is this just a card that's not "on the list"? Why would it detect incorrectly? Every other game works just fine.

It sounds like the incorrect driver is installed. If you go to control panel -> display -> settings tab what does it say under "Display:"? It sounds like windows is only seeing it as a generic card and not an GF4mx.

Well, it turned out that it was installing the 29.38 Detonators (the default of SP1 apparently) regardless of which driver set I attempted to install.

Because I'm attempting to play with a Dell laptop (Inspiron 8200 with a Geforce4 440 Go) I had to muscle the new drivers in. And for the record, here's what I did (in WinXP Pro):

- Removed the display device from the device driver.
- Rebooted and hit F8 and entered VGA Enabled mode.
- Card was still detected and I had to remove it again but I didn't reboot when prompted!
- Searched for all Nvidia files and *deleted* them from the system.
- When I rebooted, XP installed the card as a generic VGA card.
- I found a modified INF file for the 41.09 drivers so that the GF4 440 Go could be used (Go cards aren't supported in the unified drivers by default - only by manufacturer drivers or via a modified INF).
- I was then able to install the 41.09 Detonators
- Reinstalled SL to be safe
- Now able to load game! Hoorah!

I had the same problem with my laptop. Whatever drivers my laptop came with caused an 'attack of colors' when I tried to play. It was awful. I found that I couldnt get drivers, but, I found someone online that had the 41.09 for my laptop, so, I got them and all is fine. Damn those Go cards! ;)
