Changing the custom port?

Whenever I try to change the custom port, it reverts it to the default - why does this happen?

I figured this would be the only problem because I'm using a computer with 4GB of RAM, made in 2009, and I still can't log into any regions.

I believe the custom port, even when it's working, is basically there to let you avoid conflicts between port numbers when there are networked computers both running SL at the same time.

If memory serves, the default port number is 13000. So if you have two computers that will be running SL at the same time, change to port on one of them to 13001. That eliminates that port conflict.

We used to read of this problem a fair amount but I don't recall seeing it much in the past few years.

So are you saying that you can't log in to SL at all?

Have you even been able to log in to SL with that computer?

What are your system specs? If you can get to the login screen for SL, you can do Help / About Second Life , then copy the text there that describes your system, and paste it here, or go to the Can You Run It site, or use your operating system's system information tool to find out what operarting system, type of processor, type of video card, amount of video ram, and version of video driver.

Also what type of internet service, what kind of home network, and what version of Second Life.

Yes, it's quite likely that's a problem.

You might be able to get your school's IT department to set things such that you can access Second Life, but there's no guarantee.

Second Life needs a number of ports opened properly for TCP and or UDP access.

I believe the port information at my blog's page is still accurate, that's at
http://suezannecbaskerville.wordpress.com/second-life-firewalls-routers-ports-udp-tcp/

You can find the latest port info in the SL wiki or the Knowledge Base.

You might try seeing if you can find any other SL users on campus who have solved the problem.

I'll just try manually opening those ports... afterI finish my school project though, can't get distracted from important stuff, heh.

Nope, that didn't do it. I even turned off the firewall completely for a bit and still couldn't connect.
