My virus checker keeps picking up malaware V6000 in SL textures and quarantining them. Should I be worried? is there a patch I can download to prevent this happening?

Thanks, Caroline

I believe that is a bogus virus alert. I googled malaware V6000 and came up with hits for the Compaq Presario V6000 computer.......a few mentions of malware (not anything about malaware) which were incidental to posts concerning the Compaq computer. I doubt it but maybe it's some tidbit from the original textures left by the machine that the creator used to make the textures.....a Compaq Presario V6000.

You might go to your anti virus website and look it up there. Or contact their support. I would seriously doubt LL would allow any texture to be uploaded without scanning it first for any embedded exe file........just too much to loose with the terabits of data those servers have stored on them.

Assuming you AV program indentifies a specific file, you can go to http://www.virustotal.com/ and get the file tested by a whole bunch of anti-virus programs.

This is a good site to use to get an idea of whether you really have a virus, trojan, etc. or are getting a false positive report from your anti-malware software.

What versions of SL have you used? Have you used third party SL viewers like Cool Viewer, Hippo Viewer, etc.?

Of course, you could have a malware problem on your computer that is affecting SL textures. No reason to think that a problem with SL textures had to originate with the files as they came in your downloaded installation file.

I did google it myself and also got references only to the Compaq V6000, which didn't really solve the issue but since your postings I have also tried the virus total webpage, so thanks for that helpful advice. It does seem as though my virus checker is registering a false positive (sound like I'm talking about an HIV diagnosis!), I'll have to see if it is another malaware in my computer.

Thank you so much for taking the trouble to answer, I really appreciate it (good to know it's not only me thats on the computer over Christmas too...lol)

Cheers, Caroline
