Is it possible to be logged on to SL using two Macs at the same time? I'm using a wireless router and have a DSL connection. So far no success although each individual Mac logs in ok.

Cyrena --

If you have a PC, can you log onto SL with both the PC and one of the Macs?

This sounds like a common router problem, and not specifically with Macs.

What brand router do you have? And is it running the latest firmware?

Some Linksys routers have been known to have issues with two computers using a UDP application. And SL uses UDP for the most part (TCP for the initial login).

Yes! We finally got it to work.

Had to switch from Netgear router to Linksys WRT54G. At that point, no more problem.

And yes, both Macs have airport extreme cards.

Thanks everyone for your support.

:)

Glad to hear, Cyrena. The WRT54G is quite the router, so I've heard.

And I think that Merwan thought you were sharing your internet connection over Airport Extreme from broadband being connected to one of your Mac's ethernet ports. Although I have done that before, I haven't run SL on both machines simultaneously, so I haven't had problems.

And if Merwan meant the Airport Extreme base station, I would hope that Apple wouldn't be behind on UDP :)

Anyhow, problem solved, back to SL! :D

There are 3 major protocols on the Internet, TCP, UDP, and IP. Well, 2 major, as TCP and UDP are on top of IP, and are usually what people program in.

TCP is a connection-oriented protocol, and UDP is a connectionless protocol.

Because TCP has connections, every message sent over it has information about who its going to/from, and broadband routers are able to easily send packets to whichever computer on the local LAN it's meant for.

But because UDP has no connections, only IP address information is known for each message, so the router has to keep some more track of which computer on the local LAN is sending what over UDP.

Some routers don't do this so well, most of them seeming to be older Linksys routers.

I've been wondering how it works sharing your Internet connection over Airport Extreme - have just realized it was possible in the last few days. No - that is beyond anything we've attempted here.

Pete - haha! ;)
