Okay, I have now managed to finally use SL at home wih my new ADSL connection, no problems. It appears however that my problem accessing from work may be due to the fact that we use a proxy to connect to the internet via http/https. Now, the fact that the part of the login that fails is around the time that the game requests XML data from https://login.agni.lindenlab.com and the fact that SL does not appear to have anywhere to enter a proxy address may solve the problem. Does no one else use a proxy? I would have thought that this would have come up before, but a search of this board and the KB imply otherwise.. Thanks, Zoot.

SL won't work with anything other than a completely transparent https proxy. Adding support for non-transparent web proxies is pretty low priority, but I'll put the feature request into our bug database anyway.

Thanks mark. Our proxy is there not only to speed access, but also to identify users via login. (Squid proxy)
However, I have asked the techies to remove all lindenlab.com references from requiring proxy. Not sure if the https part is allowed through however. I will try that too and let you know.

The SL client doesn't use http for anything; just https. Not sure if that helps you get your proxy reconfigured or not, but they may be willing to let https go through unproxied to us, since you can't cache it or get most of the speed advantages. Good luck.
