Hi all...

I recently started fussing with some alts...

I have 2 computers, 2 secondlife sessions running on each

problem seems to be that after a while of all 4 running, the sessions on one of the computers will stop. it doesnt disconnect the sl sessions, just i cant move around or im or anything, which i guess means disconnect, but it doesnt say it, so i have to pay attention in order to close them and start them up again...

i've tried everything, each session with its own port, nothing is blocked on the router, no firewall on any computer, etc etc...

aaaaalso.... maybe not related, but heck while i'm at it... every few hrs i loose internet at home. but funny thing is i cant open google or stream music, but sl connections do not shut down... so i will be on sl fine but internet is dead all over house... and in order to fix internet i unplug cable router for 1-2 seconds and everything works again...

any ideas?

thanks!!

It really smells like a buggy router. Try different connection types (wired if you are trying to do this over wireless), checking that your boxes are up to date on their firmware, even swapping out routers (see if you can find a friend or relative with a different make/model if you don't want to buy a new one just out of speculation).

Oh yes and SL connections can disconnect silently, check the mini map and see if it gains a red tint.

Check the Actual (not quoted) download/upload bandwidth of your connection to the internet, along with ping and latency. If you have media and or voice enabled, they will require at least 2mb of the bandwidth per client.

If you are using XP, open the control panel, open Firewall icon, Exceptions tab. Uncheck everything (nothing needs to bypass your firewall) except SecondLife.exe and SLVoice (although strange why both need to bypass your firewall).

Check your Virus checker isn't continously scanning your SL cache folders, this will steal system resources. Turn off Auto Updates of QuickTime/iTunes, same for Windows, Realplayer etc. Do those manually.

Give every instance of SL a different port number.

Some routers have problems with their state tables for UDP connections

hmm, tried everything...

i did notice in event viewer that during every disconnect i get:

Your computer was successfully assigned an address from the network, and it can now connect to other computers.

so its like router is disconnecting all computers...

...cant change router, well actually its been changed twice, but its comcast so every time they put the same netgear piece of crap.

hmm, which reminds me... could it possible be comcast thinking sl is some p2p?

thought i read somewhere that they have been known to screw with sl thinking its p2p...

I think Comcast has quit screwing around with throttling or disconnectiing due to the FCC planning some sort of review on that practice.

Just a suggestion... every instance is different and I know this helped me.

Have you opened your bandwidth all the way in PREFERENCES / NETWORK on each instance you have running?
I found that I can now run 5 computers at once in SL simply by doing that AND making sure all the ports and ip addresses that SL use are placed into both my firewalls and router.
I started having problems with voice chat (V 1.18.xxx) and since adding all the ports used (not till v 1.19.xxx) I have found that not only did the audio start working and remain stable so did many other things in SL thus allowing me to stay in world....( I now hasten to advise that voice chat in V1.20.1 and 2 now turn themselves on at will without any help from me. I now run without the mic at all... sheesh)

I sympathise only too well with those who are continually being kicked out of SL.. the last few versions are simply shit,, no other word for it,, and just to advise you, it has been discussed in other areas of SL support (and there are far too many because I doubt that much is actually viewed by those who can (not will) do something about our respective plights)) Linden Labs should be making those who write the SL programmes, test them for a long period of time then pay on performance only.

I along with many others have both said and agree with the above statement because then and only then would we have the stability we are paying and longing for.

Just as there is no legislating aginst stupidity there is also no dodging slovenly scripting and testing if paid for before success.
I along with so many are tired of the constant band aid mentality that seems to exist therefore, why not fix what we have and use the knowledge from the then stable versions to update any future releases?

My appologies should this sounds a little over simplified. Just trying to appear logical is all.
If its not broken, it doesnt need fixing does it?
I'll now go sit in my corner and hope I have been of some help,, no matter how little..
