Ok, so I broke down and plopped down 200 bones for a Geforce 5700 Ultra today.
I install it with the latest drivers from the web.
SL runs fine once. I decide to get cocky and see how many things I can crank up on the card at once. I restart... BOOM
*SL has encountered a run-time error and will be shut down!*
Crash logger comes up, but then the system hangs completely. Can't even move the mouse.
So, I reboot. Uninstall SL, reinstall it, and it gets to the login screen for about, oh, 5 seconds. Then it crashes and hangs my system again.
What's going on, and what can i do to stop this before I throw the card against the wall and into my kerosene heater?

I find throwing things against the wall is always extremely satisfying, but this is rather odd. Did you take all those trouble shooting steps like uninstalling and reinstalling drivers?
Very weird. Even if reinstalling drivers does work, what happened does sound not good, you might want to take it back anyhow. I have seen the 5900 for $200.
