I think I may have cracked the code in trying to figure out what caused the lagging problem in the first place.
Linden Labs may not be at fault after all. It may be the individual user who may be to blame for the endless lagging problem that's been going on for quite some time. Individual users who take advantage of downloading video files, audio files, and other programs that could be deemed redundant to the individual user later on eventually, may cause the PC to slow down and also slow the programs (like Second Life) down, as well as possibly the Internet. Some users experience the lagging problem, some do not.
I am taking action to my lagging problem as of this evening, and I am doing a major cleanup of any video or audio files, and archiving them to a CD-ROM, a USB Flash Drive, or any portable storage device, so that I can prevent lagging from occurring in the future or even minimizing it greatly. And I strongly encourage all Second Life users to do the same also if you haven't already. It's quite possible that some users don't have the lagging problem, but you are more vulnerable to such fiasco if people take advantage of downloading video and/or audio files or installing redundant programs that have little to no usage whatsoever. Downloading and accumulating video or audio files, or even redundant programs can add up - and (much) faster than you realize. It's like useless clutter that could slow your PC down.
I have been in SL for nearly 8 months now, and I had no trouble with the lagging problem until around February, when I started to accumulate such files, and they sure added up rapidly.
Trust me, a reward will come out of it if you take my advice about archiving and/or deleting audio/video files and removing redundant programs. And if you must download video or audio files in the future, try to avoid storing them on your hard drive. Place them on a CD-ROM or storage medium immediately, and see what happens.
Try it, and you may end up seeing results in the long run.

a good rule of thumb is to format every 6 months. your computer is always gaining new and useless information like you have stated, not just from second life but from all over the web.
back up your important files and format your computer, you will be surprised at the difference in performance of your computer within only a couple of hours. make sure you have a copy of your operating system and anything else important befor trying this of course as it will permanantly delete all files on your drive.

From: Crunch Underwood a good rule of thumb is to format every 6 months. Knowing my sensitivity and protectiveness to my computer, make it a quarterly task for me. From: Crunch Underwood Your computer is always gaining new and useless information like you have stated, not just from second life but from all over the web. Does that mean every time I go into a website I can pick up useless images from message boards, websites, and other Internet related items? Is that why they are referred to as "hidden files"? If so, I will be doing a major deleting of hidden files in the coming days. A well-deserved vacation from SL to do such task will benefit me in the long run. From: Crunch Underwood Make sure you have a copy of your operating system and anything else important before trying this of course as it will permanently delete all files on your drive. What do you mean by that? Do you mean back up the Operating System in case the entire PC crashes? If it does, I do have a backup already. I don't think my PC will crash any time soon - I stay away from those "too good to be true" file-sharing programs (like Limewire, to name one) at all costs. And my AntiVirus subscription has to be renewed in a matter of days. I hope I can get an updated copy of the Norton AntiVirus software very soon.

From: Crunch Underwood a good rule of thumb is to format every 6 months. Er.. You can certainly do that if you want but the only time I reformat is when it stops working. So, basically, never. I find it easier to buy big disks if I'm going to be saving lots of videos and stuff and defrag every 3-4 months, if I remember to. Going thru the machine and deleting temp stuff (SL cache, browser cache, temp files) is a really good idea before defragging.

From: Pyrite Sopwith Is there a folder for storing browser cache and temporary files on my hard drive? plenty of them. get ATF-cleaner from www.atribune.orgpy: " I don't think my PC will crash any time soon - I stay away from those "too good to be true" file-sharing programs (like Limewire, to name one) at all costs." it's not "too good to be true" if you follow some simple steps. songs in particular will show up like "ill nino - how can I live" this is probably a legit file, if it is more than 1000kb you probably have a legit song. if it's 46.6kb it's most defiantly not. also stuff called "Ill nino.mo3" for example, is not legit.

everyone has different ways of doing things, no need to put them down for it. haveing several people on the same computer with some not knowing the dangers of some sites, especially porn sites and the like, formatting is much simpler than trying to find all the little bugs ect. that those types of sites plug into your computer and slow it down. deffiantly defrag is a good idea, my computer does it automatically once a week i havn't listened to ill-nino in ages, good times

And right now, I'm uninstalling Adobe Photoshop CS3, as it is deemed redundant a program for me right now. I do have a backup of such program, and it takes up a major amount of hard drive space (if I recall correctly, it takes up a few GB of space) and it may slow some programs down and cause some areas to slowly load up properly. Paint Shop Pro is a much better and much faster program to use for doing images and .tga files.
EDIT: Photoshop is successfully uninstalled. Hopefully I will see results and tomorrow I will conduct a major defrag of my hard drive as the finishing touches of my clearing of hard drive space. Maybe I can do a recurring defrag of my hard drive on a weekly basis also.

Unless your drive is practically full, those files shouldn't make any difference in performance.
No hard drive should need to be defragmented on a weekly basis.
