Please help me can not stop from crashing

i just bought the brand new hp pivilion it has 6 gbs of ram a nividia geforce 9600m video card and i crash constantly i had the same problem on my laptop a bought a year before this one thats why i bought it, i thought if i bought a new better computer it would work. i;ve searched through the forums updated my drivers downgraded my drivers everything i can and it's really pissing me off

Oddly enough, I've been crashing on my Desktop.

Here's the odd part-

Ran scan disk. Defragged hard drive. Re-installed several times and I still crash.


No system changes other than up-ing to 3GB RAM, and a 22" LCD.

Did as LL Tech support said, upgraded to latest DirectX, even updated Quicktime.

Within 1-5 minutes of logging in, SL locks up then crashes.

Strange thing is.... it runs fine on my laptop????

Its been like this for over a month now.

@tod69: new ram..... have you tested your ram? If that is not the problem, could be a host of other things. Is SL the only thing that is crashing, and if not, do you use other 3d programs? If you do and they crash as well, could be your graphics card, or worse thing to diagnose, the power supply. It also could be that you knocked something lose when installing the new ram too. Make sure all your connections are in solid and then run the memory test.

You may have the same problem. When you put in your graphics card you could have knocked something loose, or your power supply may not be able to handle the new card. Same suggestions at Tod69, if you just use SL with your graphics card, try another program that is 3d graphics intensive. It could also be that the card is overheating.

SL is the only thing that crashes on me.

I'll give the memory a test to check, but after using Photoshop, Maya, and running games like Fallout 3 & Crysis at Max resolution... I'm ready to scream!!

The crashes happened even before the upgrades. Thats what has me perplexed.

The PSU is still good. Heh! 650watts. I had to replace the fan on it tho. Stupid thing was dying. The new fan is much more quiet and pushes more air thru it. But that was when SL was still running fine.

Gonna go give the memory a test now.

Tried turning Aeroglas off?

@suzanne i searched my computer and control panel after reading other peoples issues an d i can't even seem to find that to turn it off

Control Panel>
on left hand pane click "Classic View"
then scroll down to find the Performance Information and Tools" section......click it
on left hand pane click "Advanced tools"
click the "Adjust Appearance and Performance of Windows" icon

You will get a pop up box where you can actually do the adjusting:
On the "Visual effects" tab.......set to "adjust for best performance"
On the "Advanced" tab.....set to "adjust for best performance of programs"
On the "Data Execution Prevention" tab.....set to "Turn on DEP for essential Windows and serives only"

That will turn off the "Aero" stuff.

On the box that pops up on the "Visual effects" tab there are things you might like about some of the visual effects that you can turn on or off. Setting to adjust for best performance turns all of those off......you can turn some back on if you want ( have a few enabled) and the setting will become "custom".

I don't know if that well help you. All I did was try to help you turn off the Aero features of Vista. If Aero is the problem (which it could be part of it.......though I doubt all of it) then your problem may be resolved........let's hope so.

well after i did it i crashed and restarted my computer hopefully it will run now though and god does the computer look ugly lmao

annnnnnd nope still crashing sigh...

Make sure you have Windows and your other drivers updated. You shouldn't have to run old drivers with the new SL viewer.

Clear the SL cache ( Edit menu > Preferences > Network). It's possible something is corrupt in it.

hmmm, is it just SL that is crashing, or are other programs crashing as well. If it's other programs too, then you probibly have some type of faulty hardware and downloading drivers, uninstalling/installing SL, turning off aero-glass will not help at all. If it is just SL that crashes, and your using other resource intensive programs, then I'm not sure why you would be crashing, unless for some reason you keep installing SL on a bad sector on your hard drive.

What other programs are running on your computer? Do you have antivirus, firewall or some kind of security software?
