Ok so heres the deal The Roomie and I both play SL, each have our own accounts but use a network to conect all the comps in the house to the internet.

Everythign BUT SL works fine. WHen we try and run sl on two seperate computers it's fine for about 5 min sometimes more sometimes less, but then they both lock up and crash. Anyone know how to stop this from happening? It's highly annoying because basicly it boils down to only one of us can be on SL at a time. Please anyone HELP.

Change your links to inclide -port <port number>

This will set the TCP port for the client so you can run multiple instances of SL on the same net.

Ports 13000 and 13001 are known to work.

If you are using PCs you can try adding the "-port" argument to the shortcut that starts Second Life.

In the shortcut for a default intallation there will be a line that reads:

"C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe"

You need to add the -port option and a port number, liike this:

"C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -port 13001

Hope that helps.

--- Hi Jillian! beat me to it! ----

To change shortcut properties find the shortcut that starts second life in your program menu that comes up with Start, Programs.

Right click it and select properties.

The place you need to change is on the Shortcut tab, labeled "Target"

Actually, your more thorough explanation is better... so you beat me to it. Just one thing:

The switches go outside of the quotes:
"C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -port 13001

I have corrected my previous post per Jillian's note.

Also, If you put this -port argument on more than one machine I assume you would make the port numbers different, so one machine might have
"C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -port 13000
and the other machine would have:
"C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -port 13001

Thanks gang that seems to have fixed it. changed the command line for the shortcut to include -port 13000 and -13001 each to a different machine then made certain to go into my router and made certain those ports were allocated and allowed for SL on both machines.

Glad you got it fixed but can I ask a question? Do you use a router to connect them to the net? I have 3 systems here all connected to the net via a 6mbps cable though a routher and never have had an issue.

2 instances on the same PC

Can you run to instances of SL on the same computer?

Each using a command line with a different port possibly?

On the same computer, port assignments aren't necessary.

Edit your SL shortcut to add "-multiple" to the end as follows:

"C:\Program Files\SecondLife\SecondLife.exe" -multiple

And yes, the quotation marks need to be there.

Caution: your performance will be horrible when running two or more instances of SL unless you have a very high end computer.

Similar Issue - IMs get crossed to other users on networked PCs
12-13-2005 11:51
I have both a desktop and a laptop with SL on them. Each is connected to a wifi router (laptop by wifi, desktop by ethernet), and then to the cable router and then to the wall.

When a friend logs in on the desktop after I log in on the laptop, our IMs get crossed and I go offline. BUT NOT REALLY, because I can still interact with the world, chat in room, build, etc. I show offline, YET IMs I send out still get to their intended recipient, BUT the recipient's response both goes to the other account's IM box AND it goes to my email as an offline message.

Clear as mud?

Multiple SL Instances
12-13-2005 17:42
Recently upgraded the wife and my desktops (configs below) and have tested multiple SL instances on both, with a fair degree of success; First the wife's system:

AMD Sempron 64/3100+ CPU
1MB of OCZ PC3200 DRAM
AsRock K8NF4G-SATA2 Motherboard
80 GB SATA2 harddisk
Nvidia 6600/256MB Video Card
350W PSU
Win 2000 Pro

Two instances run acceptably in a quiet sim

my system:

AMD 64/3000 "Venice" Ver E CPU
AsRock 939DUAL-SATA2 Motherboard
2GB of GEIL PC3200 Dual Channel DRAM
120GB SATA2 Harddisk
ATI X800GTO 256MB Video Card
450W PSU
Win 2000 Pro

Four instances will run, in a quiet sim.

Both systems are slightly overclocked, with stock cooling.

I consider the Sempron configuration to be a very good value system for SL.

Comments are most welcome!
