It's client side lag. I get maybe 1fps. I don't understand it. Yes I cleared my cache. I even uninstalled and re-installed and installed emerald as well. Nothing makes a difference. I've also lowered all settings to the lowest.
When I log in I am lag free for about 1 minute, then the lag kicks in and I can't even move. Lag meter shows client side lag, but not network or server.
I have a triple core processor, 4 gigs of ram, ati x1950 pro video card, and windows 7. Everything else I play on my computer runs perfect. But can't even walk in SL.
Any suggestions?

Any suggestions? I am deeply sympathetic Danx. For what it's worth... Script Limits in Technology Posted by Babbage Linden on Dec 15, 2009 Second Life is a rich and engaging interactive world due to scripts. Every time you open a door, fly a plane, sail a boat, use a vending machine or dance in a night club a Resident authored script is interpreting your interactions to make things happen. Unfortunately the current scripting system does not include any mechanism to limit the number of scripts that can be added to the world or attachments on avatars. This allows both malicious Residents to cripple simulators by running huge numbers of scripts and well meaning Residents to accidentally run more scripts than a simulator can cope with. When too many scripts are running in a region the server simulating that region runs out of memory, dramatically increasing the lag experienced in all regions running on the same server. This is especially noticeable in homestead regions as more homesteads run on a single server. In addition, when an avatar with many scripted attachments enters a region the simulator has a lot of work to do setting up the scripts to run in the new process, causing a lag spike that can be noticed by all Residents using that region. At Linden Lab we are working with Mono developers to reduce the lag spikes experienced when scripts enter a region, adding scripting functions that allow more efficient scripts to be authored and building a system for limiting the resources used by scripts on a per m^2 and per avatar basis. We're also working very hard to analyse the current memory usage by scripts across the grid to determine the best values for script limits that minimise the lag caused by simulators running out of memory while affecting as few Residents as possible. We're planning to make script memory usage along with our proposed script limits visible to all Residents for an extended period before enforcing any limits. This will give us time to gather feedback on the proposed limits and identify any situations where we're going to be imposing unreasonable restrictions and give will give you time to compare your usage against the proposed limits, give us feedback and have plenty of time to prepare. I'm looking forward to working with you all towards a lag free and more efficient Second Life in 2010.

Resetting your modem and router (if one is involved). Manually deleting your cache folder from your hard drive. Check for background programs that may be running. If using a wireless connection, try hard wire...........also most routers are wireless so there is the possibility that someone close to you is piggy backing on your connection (if you haven't done so lock your router down......even if you are hardwired).

Not wireless, and connected directly to my modem, not using a router. And running speed tests I'm getting right at 30 megs down and about 3 up.
No other programs running. And even moved my cache to another hard drive.

Have you played around with the Bandwidth setting on the network page? I have found that if I set it too low or too high, I can end up trying to walk thru molasses.

You seem to be suffering from a graphics driver related issue. Most likely due to the most recently updated driver. I too had this problem on my beast which actually prevented me from being in game for a while as Win7 and Nvidia drivers didnt get along with SL. I am running a slightly outdated custom driver in order to run SL. It's primarily due to the base graphics for the game itself. I find SL has issues with OpenGL a lot, which is why I had to use custom drivers and slightly outdated with Win7.
My only solution to you would be to play around with drivers, or look into the control panel for different options that you can modify specifically for the program itself, I know we have them on nvidia but not sure about ATI as well, ATI cards are generally not as good as Nvidia, but I would definitly recommend playing with the graphics driver settings for SL as a specific program, and seeing what happens.
Alternatively, running the shortcut in Compatability mode, as you should be running a 64 bit operating system, as well as running with administrative rights may help you a little bit, but ultimately you will need to change the specific program settings for SL through the graphics card/driver control panel and or change your graphics driver to an older more stable driver, though they are hard to find as Windows 7 is not hugely supported yet with graphics drivers, or Second Life for that matter.
Hope this helps, I'll be monitoring the post to see your response.

It's really hard to find older drivers for windows 7. I use an ati card. It's not the best card but I should be able to get more then 1-2fps. I'll change some settings in the ati control panel and see if it makes any difference.

I know this problem. Sometimes it´s so laggy that walking is impossible. But you´ve the same video card as I got before. To make it short: Buy a new video card. I´ve a Ati 5770 now. Works much better with SL.

Danx, I have the same problem, and no tips in the forums helped me. The only thing that has worked is to uninstall the 1.23 version and go back to the old 1.22 version. Then everything is perfectly fine just like the old days.
Like you, I tried Emerald and some other outsider versions, but since those are all 1.23-versions, same problem.
If you don't have the 1.22 install file, message me and I'll figure out a way to get it to you.

I'd be curious as to getting a 1.22 version... I'd like to see how SL ran before superlag.

*shameless plug* My Rainbow/Cool Viewers are both 1.22 with an updated baseline 1.22.12 including numerous fixes and additions and are fully adult compatible (link below). I'm not going anytime soon to 1.23 which is not only one of the worst viewer release ever but it's virtually dead aka "frozen" since the lousy release was forced official (besides one urgent security fix). The official 1.22 viewer (and older versions) you can still get here (it doesn't have adult functionality nor the security fixes): http://wiki.secondlife.com/wiki/Old_versions

Lousy POS Software

I am having the same issue. I've been having this issue for months now and I'm finally sick of 'just dealing with it'.
I can login, and do stuff that is not very graphical intensive for hours and be fine, but if I am on a complex sim or render extremely dense or intricate particle systems, my framerate will drop to 1-5 fps, and stay there. Regardless of where I go, if I relog, anything, it will keep my framerate low. For about 10 minutes.
After that, it will go back to normal for anywhere from 1-20 minutes(less if I render anything terribly complex again) and repeat.
I can't tell for the life of me why it's doing this. It seems like an overheating problem, but if Bioshock and L4D/L4D2 are not melting it like that on max graphics, SL on mid settings sure as hell shouldn't be either.
I have my system stripped down very slim on a fresh install of XPSP3, nothing to conflict with SL.
I have the latest graphics card drivers. I have old versions I have tried. None of them fix anything.
I have tried the latest Emerald, RC, and Main build clients. I have tried the 1.22 client. I have done this on two different computers with different vid cards, boards, etc. Same results.
The lag is 100% client-side and has nothing to do with my routers/modem. I am directly wired into a cable modem which reads 10 Down / 2 Up on speedtest, and no amount of resetting it helps this.
I realize this is an open-sourced client now, but it seems like some fundamental part of the client engine is just completely broken. I wouldn't doubt it has something to do with the immense page files SL now generates, clearly demonstrating a massive unhandled memory leak. It could also have to do with something implemented for Windows7 or Vista support, as this wasn't an issue until I clean installed a newer viewer several months ago.
I'm not a noob, I can recompile from source with a special flag or something if that will work, I just really want my client not to suck anymore. I don't fly around huge forests, I don't have huge particle spammy glowy things on my screen, I just build and script, but at 5fps even scripting is a pain.

Not true. Those programs contain objects and graphics that are professionally made. SL is not........it's about 95% user made (and most are no where near professional). Most (if not all) the objects, textures are stored on your local computer ready to be accessed from your hard drive. The same items in SL are stored on the Linden Lab servers (located in two locations in the US......San Francisco, CA and Dallas, TX). You just cannot compare games with SL. It's not even like comparing apples and oranges.......more like comparing a building with a river. Some computer specs might help out.
