I'm struggling with the question of whether to upgrade my 5 year old computer or invest in a new one entirely. My stupid question is----is it possible to upgrade the old beast with a new video card and more memory, and then move them to a new computer later, as long as the slots are the same? Told you it was stupid....

no you cant
reasons why
video card, 5 years old takes AGP, its very rare to see AGP on a new mainboard
ram, 5 years old hopefully takes DDR ram (or slower) new machines take DDR2, which takes an entirely different socket (but its cheap as hell, half the price of DDR ram)
you could use your old case, possibly power supply, cd drives floppy, hard drives and just about everything else tho

Depends on your motherboard. 5 years ago my motherboard supported a P4 Intel processor with 3.04 gigs speed (though on a slower bus), up to 3 gigs DDR ram, and PCI video graphics cards (it did have an AGP 8X slot but I never used it). So, yes (if your MB supports it) you can upgrade your old system fairly cheaply. But, would it be a wise investment? In my opinion, no. New, dual core (and even quad core) machines with PCI express and DDR3 memory are really pretty cheap........not that much more than attempting to upgrade your old machine given the possibility that something on that old machine has probably reached and passed it intended life span.

Willing to bet youd be better off replacing it then upgrading, since old parts = expensive.

New machines with decent specs can be a reletive bargain compared to buying parts that may or may not work efficiently with your current setup. One thing I have learned over time ( and buying several machines) is that its good to buy bigger than you think you need. Especially if you ever consider a laptop, cus your pretty much locked into the configuration you have chosen. Last laptop I bought was released with a 256mb Nvidia card the following month for like the same price, guess who's stuck with the 128.
