Second Life features a state of the art 3D graphics engine, which requires a high-end graphics card to run well, preferrably an nVidia FX card.

"Generic video card"

You mean a GeForce isn't common enough to be 'Generic'?

We got secondlife to run with the onboard video on the Dell we just bought. It's a Dimension 4600 and comes with "Intel Extreme Graphics 2" integrated video.

It was definitely usable, but not nearly as pretty as the nvidia we bought soon thereafter.

You need a video card with 3D acceleration. If yours is just a 2D card, SL won't run.

If you can figure out the specific card you're using with the generic video driver, you can install the proper drivers for it and it may work just fine. Do you know what model of card it is? Do you know if it's a seperate card or on your motherboard? Is this a laptop?

Do you know what video card you actually have? It's likely you just have to install the video drivers and it'll work fine.

I just got a computer with a Trident 9680 graphics card. Will that work with SecondLife? ;)
