in an earlier post i mentioned crashing as soon as i logged... the blame seeming to fall with the ATI catalyst 8.8 driver
i'm on a new video card (nvidia 8800) with the driver on the cd that came with the card... and I'm in sl fine
granted this is the older pc and it's xp not vista
i'm debating switching cards
unless someone chimes in that nvidia is poop on vista too... i'll likely switch later today

well... that worked. I swapped out my cards, putting the new Nvidia 8800 GT in this machine (with Vista 64) and I was able to get into SL, and use my mouse and not crash. And it looks FABULOUS. I teleported, flew, opened search, and walked around just fine. Everything rezzed so much faster than before too.
I'm very happy to be back in SL on my new pc.. but I'm quite unhappy I had to put the 4850 ATI card in the old Dell relic but whatever. I'm in like flynn for now, thank you Nvidia for playing nice with Second Life.

once I get another ethernet cable or feel like playing swapsies again, I'm going to try running sl on the Dell that is now home to the ATI card that wouldn't let me run SL.
I'm interested to see if I can run sl with that same card only on XP.

well... the dell (XP) ran sl fine with the ATI card. (Radeon 4850) using the cd that came with the card which is catalyst version 8.5
So... purely based on my personal experience it's a vista issue. When I tried running that card on the new pc (Vista 64) with the 8.5 version, it wouldn't work saying I had an outdated driver or something along those lines. That was SL only.. otherwise I had no issue.
*shrugs*.. at least I'm running it.

*shrugs*.. at least I'm running it. I would not say it's so much a Vista Problem as a Vista 64 bit problem. In fact there are many users of XP 64 that report issues with graphics. Toss in ATI and it's weakness with OpenGL and it gets messy. |
