Lagging and crashing

I am sure the computer and internet provider I am using is more than capable of handling Second Life, but for some reason I keep lagging and whenever I change my appearance, it crashes. It is rather annoying when I'm trying to RP, and at the moment I am trying to buy an item of use to my character. How do I stop the lagging and crashing?
