Every time I try to start Second Life, I get an error stating "Second Life is already running. Check your task bar for a minimized copy of the program, If this message persists, restart your computer."

I have uninstalled and installed newest and older versions, I have rebooted many times. I have cleared my cache many times. Still the same message. I have even tried to set up for multiple loggin's all to no avail. Can anyone help please???

You didn't say what operating system you are using so I can only tell you what happened to me a few months ago (btw, it really helps if you would take the extra step to at least tell us what operating system, video card, CPU, or any other information that you think is relevant to your issue.....we are not mind readers and we are not sitting next you either).

I had the same issue after a Windows Vista update a few months. I would try to start SL and get the message you are getting. I just knew SL was not running.....nothing on my task bar, or any other indication that any program was running. I finally I finally did the alt control delete trick and checked processes (the Task Manager). Sure enough SL was listed as running. I ended the process and could log in fine. But, it did not fix my problem because anytime I tried to run SL after shutting (like the next day) I got the same message and had to end the process again before logging in to SL. Pretty bazzaar, huh? :)

The problem was finally fixed for good by my digging into why SL was starting when I started my computer. I found it.......it was in my start menu under "Startup". Somehow, SL was put in that folder to start each time I started my computer. I didn't do it (at least not knowingly) so i figured the Windows update somehow put it there.........possibly because I was on SL at the time I got the update. I have since chosen not to have auto update automatically install..........I just get the notification and will install when I want. Not when Microsoft wants.

That particular problem is probably not your problem........but without any information from you at all that's all I can offer.

My system is a Sony Vaio running Windows XP Professional Version 2002 Service Pack 2.

It is a 3.2 gig P4 with 1 gig of ram. The video card is a GeForce FX Go5700 nVidia with 128 meg of ram.

I too went to the task manager and killed the process. However I have nothing in the startup nor does anything show up in msconfig.

It simply would not restart after logging off to go to the store.

You said you went to task manager and "killed:" the process? Does that mean it was listed as running like mine was? I had no indication it was running but it was simply there in the processes and I could not log in until I ended it.

And your system should run SL just fine.........but if you ever upgrade to Vista on that computer you are at least 1 gig shy of what you need for SL to run without problems (3 gigs is better).

If you're really sure that there is no other SL instance running, find your SecondLife/logs folder, delete SecondLife.exec_marker, and at the point you should either log off/on from your session (on your computer, not SL) or reboot (to make sure there aren't any remnants of an old SL process lingering). If the viewer finds that file and it appears to be locked, that's where the message comes in.

That did it. Thank you. I had found that file earlier and suspected it might be related, but was afraid to do anything to it.
